Dear singers:

I'm originally a pianist but I was so fascinated by many good singers (I mean pop generally....sorry not a big fan of classical singing and opera ph34r.gif )...and hence I'm trying to self learn how to sing pop songs....

I did so by singing pop music and practice with my piano... I found that my range had actually got broader. main expanding to more secure higher pitch...I'm a male baritone, now I can go up to Ab/A in the treble clef without falsetto without screaming or shouting laugh.gif All my friends had said that I've improved in my singing...

Is this normal? Is it good to just practice like that?

Without hearing you it's hard to know if what you're doing is right or not, but one thing is certain: there are many ways to sing a note - I can think of seven basic configurations of the vocal folds and larynx, plus the various combinations of those configs - this means that things aren't as clear-cut as 'chest' and 'falsetto', which in fact are only two of the said configurations and blends.

So, you may well have stumbled upon a configuration that you use naturally well and (with the proviso that I haven't heard you) as long as you're not feeling any scratching or tickling in your throat, or any sensation of tightness when you're doing it, and as long as you like the sound - I'd say you're probably doing ok and should keep going.

If you get some lessons with a good teacher who knows their stuff, though, you'll get a whole load of new and interesting ways to sing all those notes!
