hello
Can anyone suggest some nice pieces or books for the violin, around Grade 6 standard? We seem to have exhausted our local music shop & bought everything they have & need some guidance for buying online as you don't get to flick through the books before buying.
Many thanks

I love the book Fritz Kreisler repetoire. There are 2 books but you buy them seperately so don't have to go for both.

It has pieces that are good at the said standard but also some harder pieces for when the musican gets more talented.

If she hasn't looked at the Bach Double yet, I'd recommend it - a lot of people think it's easy - those people generally play it poorly - to play it well and get the whole thing to feel like a whole is a challenge. I reckon it would be a nice challenge for her at her current level.

The Kreisler stuff is a good idea too, although I'd suggest that the harder pieces will be better once the musician gets more practised, rather than talented (!)

There are some nice Dvorak pieces at that level: I forget which numbers, but two of the Four romantic pieces would be manageable, officially I think one has been grade 5 and one of the harder ones has been grade 8. There's also his Sonatine.

Dancla's Airs Varies are fun, possibly a bit tricky in places for grade 6.

I also like the Schubert Sonatinas - a few easier movements have been set for grade 5, they probably go up to grade 7/8.

In terms of Kreisler, if you don't want to buy a whole collection she could start with Aucassin and Nicolette, Tempo di Minuetto, and maybe Schon Rosmarin. But there are harder pieces like Praeludium and allegro she'll probably want later too.

Mazas studies are nice too - op. 36.

Lots of the above is available free at IMSLP.org by the way - although you may want an edition with good fingerings and bowings, I guess it depends whether it's just for playing around or studying with her teacher.

There are also some great Sheila Nelson collections which span about grade 5-7: I had "The Baroque Violinist" but there were Classical and Romantic volumes too which looked equally interesting.

And I echo the Bach double. smile.gif Linked to that, there are also Telemann canonic sonatas - there's one of them in the Sheila Nelson Baroque book.

Handel Violin Sonatas

There are loads of good Baroque sonatas around Grade 6 standard - already mentioned are Handel, and Telemann, but there are lots of nice Italian pieces too - Corelli, Albinoni, etc. and these are mostly reasonably priced too.

There's a nice Spanish piece my daughter used to play, but might have been Grade 7 rather then 6 'Playera' by Sarasate..
I recall her playing No 1 of 'Two Pieces' by William Walton at about Grade 6 time. Its got some good harmonics in it !
Dvorak Sonatina Op100 (already menioned) we love and still play from time to time, and yes one of his 'Four Romantic pieces' is much easier than the other three.
There are also a few Mozart Sonata movements that a Grade 6 player could manage, eg look at No 4 (In E Minor)
