Hi,

I'm hoping some of the folk on here can help me. I am looking for suggestions of duets I could play with my tutor. I play viola (just passed Grade 5, but probably looking for slightly easier viola parts to start with) and my tutor plays violin.

I don't have much experience playing duets, so I'm looking for suggestions of fairly easy duets as well as some that I can grow into.

I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas of suitable music to look at.

Thanks in advance,

Lis

I've also been looking for duets, but have drawn a blank, although i was looking for a bit easier than you are as i wanted to play with my daughter. I now have a friend who plays violin so I'm back looking again.

Does your tutor have any ideas?

Hi 2childmum,

my tutor suggested asking here! I'm her only viola student, and so she is always a little vauge about repetoire for me.

Let's hope someone will drop by to offer some suggestions for us both. I'm all for easy duets - my ensemble and sight reading skills are useless so I need to start off easy at first and then build up to more challenging ones.

I remember playing gorgeous duets wih my viola friend when in school - about Grade 5 standard - by Pleyel. No idea of Opus but they are fairly well known in the viola world.

It's been a long time since I played viola and memory is a fickle thing but I did have a look at the 2 Mozart duos which are absolutely sublime (no surprise there). I guess your teacher wouldn't have a problem with the violin part and I reckon at Grade 5 you could have a stab at quite a lot of the viola. Guess what? They're in the public domain on the IMSLP database - here:

Wow, that for that folks. a couple of great suggestions. I even managed to find the Pleyel on the site pushpull recommended. They certainly fit the criteria of something to grow into!

Thanks.

Excellent news onion / Lis, so pleased for you. I have many fond memories of 'playing the Pleyel' (phnar), it's great fun with a viola and violin duetting with such entertaining music. Good luck with them.
