Full Version: Opportunity For Me In A Band!
Forums > ABRSM > Adult Learners
Neenee
Just had to tell someone - everyone - I have the chance to play in a wind band! I'm so excited. I put my hand up to play the flute, but there are no vacancies. However, they want someone to play percussion and the percussionist is really happy to teach someone the ropes. This will be so good helping me with rhythm. First practice is Tuesday next week - and I'm on the waiting list for a flute opening too.

Will let you know how it goes. Can't wait! tongue.gif

That's great news! And you'll be on the spot if a flute vacancy comes up. smile.gif I hope you have a great time at the rehearsal next week. smile.gif

Wonderful Neenee : have fun! biggrin.gif
oboe d'amore
Oh this is fantastic news!
You will learn so many things and once you know people well in the band, flute position is coming to you in near future!

And percussion is such a good part to know everything, really.
not only rhythm, whole flow the music, how you come in the music etc.
I remeber, we all had to do 3 months percussion section in Senior High School Band- but I appreciate this now and my teacher's decision was absorutely correct!

How exciting Neenee. Hope you enjoy it. Let us know how it goes. smile.gif

This sort of post reminds me how lucky I am to live near an orchestra where nobody is turned away because we have enough of any instrument.
We work with what we have and if you want to play you are welcome.

That's exciting news neenee.

Enjoy - there's nothing like making music with like minded people no matter which instrument you play.

The band practice was last night and it was great! I really enjoyed it. Just what I am looking for. I played all kinds of things I had never even seen before, and some I had. For the most part I was able to follow the music and bang whatever I was supposed to bang at the right time. The conductor said she had my name down for a flute opening but in the meantime is happy for me to continue with the percussion and I'm happy to wait. Just so pleased to be there. It's great - so exciting! Next practice, next Tuesday. biggrin.gif

Fantastic stuff! I've been away so I didn't see you post this last week, but it's absolutely great you were able to find something and even if you can't join in exactly as you would want to right now, at least you can join in somehow and have a great time!

Good for you Neenee, and the other thing is that once you join a band you make lots of new musical friends and find out about other opportunities near you. It really does open up a whole new world. smile.gif Did for me anyway biggrin.gif

So glad that it went well Neenee and that you enjoyed it! yay.gif

I am waiting to hear whether I can join my local orchestra. The conductor needs to check with the committee! Went to listen to a rehearsal last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. They seem very friendly so fingers crossed. smile.gif

I've had an email today saying that I am welcome to go along to rehearsals and play second oboe, though they can't guarantee that I can play in a concert as they have "helpers to come in and play for us if needed". unsure.gif

As they haven't heard me play yet I am assuming that they are just trying to make sure they don't commit themselves if I turn out to be terrible. Otherwise that seems a bit weird! Hopefully I won't be terrible!

So I am going to my first rehearsal next Tuesday, apparently there is a chance that neither of the oboists can make it so I maybe doing a solo! Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound. smile.gif

Great to hear that you enjoyed the practice, Neenee, and here's hoping that there's a flute vacancy for you soon... in the meantime, keep on having fun with the percussion!

I went along to join the training section of our local band yesterday - my first time playing clarinet in an ensemble - and it was sooooooo much fun biggrin.gif Next week I shall play in the training session and then stay for the half-hour overlap with the main band, and after that I shall be in the main band if they will still have me...

It's so exciting!

I suspect that's the case flobiano, but you're not going to be terrible, so that won't be an issue! smile.gif
