I would love to know what 'B' list pieces any of you are learning or teaching at the moment and why you have chosen them.

I have two grade 8 pupils who have chosen their 'A' and 'C' pieces but are dithering a little about the 'B' list. I would be inclined to go for the Clementi (I think it's B2) but I shall eagerly await your comments.

For your information, one of these pupils has chosen the Cimarosa Sonata for her 'A' piece and the wonderful Piazzolla 'Retrato' from the 'C' list. I think perhaps I would choose those two, but my other pupil has chosen Alligator Crawl (equally excellent of course) and then...wait for it...the Hindemith 'Interludium and Fuga secunda in G'! Yes, he is a brave boy!

I only have one doing 8 at the moment and he is doing the Clementi for the B list, but talk about a brave (or stupid) boy - he's doing the Prokofiev for the C list, and with luck and a fair wind I think he'll pull it off but that last page is a pig I wouldn't do it because my hands aren't big enough.

Mind you, the harder you work - the luckier you get

A friend of mine is also doing the Clementi for the B list. I really like it. But they can't decide on the C... whether to go for the Scriabin Poeme or the Brahms piece, tough choice, as they're both beauties. Though the Scriabin is, I think, considerably more difficult.

The Clementi is the same one my daughter did for Gr8 about 15yrs ago (except all of the Sonata had to be played in those days), and I still play it occasionally. It would be that or the Beethoven last movement for me. The Beethoven is probably easier technically.
Even now I find the Prokofiev (list C) almost impossible !

A few years ago I did the Prokovief on the organ - I think it is more difficult on the piano though.

I still have days when I'm tempted to tell him to go for the Brahms instead, but he's so nearly got it.

I am doing

A1 Cimeriosa I absolutely loves these style of music. They are absolutely gorgeous and wouldn't mind playing for hours
B2 Clementi because my teacher said because I am a natural [apparently =/] at scales and there are lots of scales passages but I do enjoy it a lott.
C [something ] Brahms. I love it, it sounds so elegant but I'm having trouble with the stretches on the first two lines on the second page, I would look at that closely before comminting yourself to it.

My piano teacher has another grade 8 student who's doing the same as me, but doing the Alligator Crawl as her C piece instead.

I'm attempting the Clementi-I know it's very long but I actually like it, haven't warmed much to the G8 pieces this year.
