I have a student who enjoys jazz and for his GCSE Music Exam wants to play the jazz piece which is in the Associated Board's Grade Five 2009/2010 exam piece book. I think it is appropriate, being, obviously, Grade Five level, and short at only two pages. Am I right in letting him learn it for his GCSE Exam?

If its the right standard i do not see why not.

It is wise to check with the school's music teacher. It is ultimately their responsibility to ensure the piece is appropriate.

A quicker way might be to check with the board. OCR were very helpful when my daughter was doing GCSE.

I agree. Get your pupil to take the piece into school and ask the music teacher if it is acceptable. I don't see why it shouldn't be okay, but it's best to be sure.

The maximum requirement for GCSE is grade 4 to recieve full marks in the difficulty mark. This doesn't mean you can't play anything harder. I played one of the grade 6 exam pieces for my GCSE as well as a grade 8 piece (AQA Board). It sounds acceptable to me! smile.gif
