By the way, someone *has* to have a go at playing Bach's Prelude in C on that piano... It will sound beautiful!

Any volunteers? tongue.gif

Err, just looked/listened to it on you-tube, will dig up the score on the internet and try it out tonight. Does it have pedalling? I'm not the best with the pedal.

This is it yeah? This copy has seems to have "instructions" too.

That's it... it's a poor quality scan though. I have a much cleaner version. It does have some really useful info on that one though, thanks for posting that link!

Like it says, you aren't supposed to pedal, but tbh, for the purposes of a bit of fun, a little pedal won't hurt for effect if you really want to use it wink.gif

Don't worry! I feel exactly like you!!! but let's not treat it like a concert but a bit of fun (or I won't come!!! biggrin.gif )!!! I'll probably also decide on the day what I'm going to try to play biggrin.gif (apart from the accompaniment that might require a bit more preparation so I don't let Barry down!!! biggrin.gif ) I might make loads of mistakes, might have to stop, restart...but hey at least we'll have fun and we'll be able to say we've played on a Steinway!!!! laugh.gif

Believe you me, you will not be the only one stopping and starting. I tend to just go blank through the middle of a piece!!!!

Solari, yes if you do have Haydn's little serenade. I did download it after you recommended it a while back to me, but the only copy I could find was really bad. I'll pm you with my e-mail address.

By the way: Can I just confirm the sexes of everyone?

Solari - Male
Missypiano - Femail
Eldatom - User name Sounds male
Barry-Clari - Male? (Only kidding)
Mini_mo - Female (I should know my own ### by now wink.gif )
JoMook - Female ?

How did I do? Its annoying, in the profile it should state the ###

EDIT: Oops I didnt realise it would block out certain words!

errrr. wrong lol - I am female, name is made up of all 3 of my children's names. Think it gets a lot of people.

Also - Eldatom, if you could confirm closer to the time, it'd be great. If you can't make it, we'll coerce someone else into attending wink.gif

Looking good at the moment, but give me a few more days just in case hubbie changes his mind and says that he does want to go away. At the moment it is a big flat no!

Just had a thought.

You wouldn't want me to abuse a piano with my rudimentary 'skills' laugh.gif , but what I can do is bring a clari/flute/both, and the lower end ABRSM grade books (grade 1, 2, maybe 3), and if anyone wants to have a go at accompanying, I'll come along and play? smile.gif

The Phoenix : pub grub (very good pub grub biggrin.gif ), but not an awful lot for vegetarians (there's a pasta meal which is very nice, plus veggie burgers, but not a lot else).

Strada : Italian restaurant. Very good pizzas.

Garfunkel's : Amercian style food (burgers, steaks etc.). A chain, but none the worse for that.

I have never played on a grand before - I wonder how it feels?

It will feel a bit lighter than an upright I'm guessing due to the hammers being assisted by gravity tongue.gif Whatever you play will sound immensely better than on a normal upright wink.gif

It will probably sound better than an ordinary upright (like any other instrument this assumes that it is properly set up and looked after, but it is probably a fair assumption since they are charging for it!)

However, not sure about the hammers being assisted by gravity: In fact it is the exact opposite - the hammer hits the string from below, against gravity. This contributes to a tendency for a grand piano action to feel slightly heavier than an upright. This greater inertia of the keys comes as a bit of a surprise but once you get used to it you realize that a grand piano action is also much more sensitive and responsive, and the range of dynamics available is huge. I may not be expressing this very well -someone with greater technical background may be able to do better - but suffice to say the guess is based on a misapprehension!

I don't know anything other than what I've read but a few weeks ago I picked up an informative little book in a secondhand shop called The Rough Guide to the Piano, which says that the hammers of a grand strike upwards rather than forwards so when you release the keys, gravity enables the dampers and hammers to fall back into place by themselves. This apparently means (together with having slightly longer keys apparently) that you've got more control over the sound - eg it's easier to go from very soft to very loud and playing rapidly repeated notes is easier. I don't suppose the author/publisher will mind me using what they've said if I give the book a plug tongue.gif Oh and make sure you play with the lid open and reflecting the sound towards the audience off the inside of the lid (plug for the Rough Guide again biggrin.gif)

This sounds like a really fun thing to do Solari - are you planning to work your way round all the piano studios biggrin.gif If you do one next Spring/Summer, I'd love to try and come down to one!

Well... if it goes well, I'm looking at making it a regular thing, kind of like a Piano Support Group wink.gif

They also have a performance space there, so perhaps a learner's piano concert might be an idea at some point. biggrin.gif

I think it's quite a nice idea to have G0-G5 together as there isn't the intimidation of having the higher grades around who make you realise that you still have a mountain to climb! It remains just a bit of fun, and a confidence boosting exercise for playing in front of others in a non-judgemental environment.

Discovered another place during the weekend, which might be interesting for future events: 1901 Arts Club - practically on the doorstep of Waterloo station - has a gorgeous Steinway C (plus the venue is stunning). Slightly pricey, though Link here (When I walked in, my first thought was it'd be perfect for a forum concert, but I don't think they'd let us disguise a forum concert as a "rehearsal" unsure.gif)

Also, if you want to make this a regular event (great idea!) and accommodate a few more people, you might want to consider the larger teaching rooms at RCM; they do hire those out during non-term time. No idea about the price, though.

Musicians based in London requiring a music room larger than their own living room for chamber music rehearsals or for playing through a programme for friends will find the generous proportions of the Salon/Concert room very attractive.

We have a winner! wink.gif
