Hiya, haven't posted for a while but I'm auditioning for my universities musical selections concert soon as a Chorus member and I'm really stuck for a song to sing!! I'm an alto, reasonably (but not very confident) and would appreciate any advice on song choice
Thanks

Any particular style, character, age, difficulty?

There are thousands...! Could we narrow it down a little?!

Well, I'm 19 and preferably not too difficult or obscure would be good as the selections are going to include things from Hairspray and The Producers - but nothing that everyone sings! I think fairly upbeat would probably be best as well
Thanks!

How about 'Anything goes' from Anything goes? Its quite lively and I think it should be OK for an alto from what I remember.

"As long as he needs me" from Oliver is really good for a true alto - you'd need a good bottom G though. Is that the sort of thing you're after?

Someone Else's Story, from Chess? You need a bottom E... Or Heaven Help My Heart doesn't go as low.
Any of Charity's songs from Sweet Charity - Where Am I Going? is nice, or If My Friends Could See Me Now.
Another Suitcase in Another Hall, from Evita?
I Don't Know How to Love Him, from Jesus Christ Superstar...
There are a couple of songs from Jekyll and Hyde - Someone Like You is nice. (I think Rosfrog recommended it to me when I made a similar request).
There are loads!
Oh, of those, I guess only If My Friends Could See Me Now is truly upbeat... I'm just recommending stuff I like to sing... Umm... I Got Rhythm? Or from Sweet Charity "I'm a Brass Band"...

Some great suggestions already - one majorly important question, though - can you belt? If you can't you may want to avoid as long as he needs me, someone else's story etc.
If you can, then I'd suggest bring on the men from Jekyll and Hyde if you want a raunchy number or a new life if you want something a bit more emotional.
Classics such as on my own, I'd give my life for you and I dreamed a dream would be good too - but again these require good strong belt notes to do them properly.
If you're not confident belting, then I'm not that girl from wicked is lovely and doesn't require any belt - you can really show your acting skills in this one too and it has the advantage of being a truly lovely song!
Good luck with your audition.
