I was talking to my music teacher about starting another instrument at school. I already play clarinet, piano and guitar, but you know, i can't resist more instruments. So she said they had a Tenor Trombone that nobody ever used, and I could take it home for the weekend!!

Hehe, It makes me laugh. It's such a silly shape!!

I don't know what model it is, but it's a Yamaha. It's bound to be quite a cheap one becuase my school is seriously cheap skates.

Congratulations! You are heir to a 500 year tradition, since the sackbut, which differs from the simple tenor trombone mainly in size of bell and tubing, was invented about 1475, and has never gone out of fashion. The trumpet is even older, but has changed more.

Great to hear some one else learning the trombone! Why not give your self a real challenge and try the new ABRSM Jazz Grades 1-5 available for jazz horns.

Fantastic! The world needs more trombones... we've had to get my friend's brother to come and play trombone in our school production because nobody at my school plays it!
Oddball
Cool, cheers everyone.

Yeah, no-one else at my school plays it either. I didnt realise that there was such a shortage!!
Oddball
Does anyone know why that there is such a lacking of players??
cheeble
According to my friend's brother, it's because most people's embouchres suit the trumpet or horn.

My son took Grade 8 trombone and played with some good groups, but gave it up because he realised when he started work that he could no longer find the practice time to retain the standard that he had reached. Some time before all that, I went with him to a specialist workshop for brass players, and the trombone tutor pointed out that he was always going to be inhibited as a trombone player,* because the space between his upper lip and his nose was too small for the right size of trombone mouthpiece.

* I think the tutor meant that he was very unlikely to become principal trombone in a top symphony orchestra mad.gif

Yes, and he was a good enough 'cellist while still at school to play the Brahms Clarinet Quintet in a group that won the open chamber music class at a competitive festival. Nowadays he mostly plays jazz guitar, electric bass and percussion. cool.gif

The main reason I think that there is a shortage of trombone players is because it really is not a cool instrument (although I think it is) trombone players always get less money and there is not enough work out there. Also after reading alot on this forumI think that there is too much focus on these Grade exams. Grade 8 means nothing except that you have practised a load of scales and some pieces of music that nobody has ever heard of. Was it Dizzy Gillespie who said 'if you pay too much to what is written down, you miss the music" Anyway I have been a working professional tombone player for 15 years and never took a grade because I enjoyed playing too much.

Hello all,
Just stumbled on this site...Great.
I`ve played Bass and some guitar for a few years now. I `ve messed with the Alto Saxophone a few times for fun, but I`ve just commited to buying a new trombone, hay at last...
I`m a big fan of Ska and HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED RICO`S PLAYING ON MANY OF THE SPECIALS recordings. I don`t read music at all and have always played by ear...This will be the first time i touch a trombone, I can`t wait to get experimenting with it ...I always just go for it with any instrument and learn by trial, error and ear alone, i`ve always found this the best fun , and it works for me... I get to bored with learning all the techie stuff..(not saying it`s wrong.. It`s right for some) I `ve played with some technicaly brilliant musicians who were terrible when it came to creating new sounds and improvising to create original material, and i`ve played with less technical peeps who constantly created the most incredible music and could play anything just by listening... Just seems that a lot of huff about nothing getting in the way of actualy playing all this grade stuff, I`m just going to have a real go at it and see what i find for myself...Then i`ll try and hopefully find another trombone player in my area and learn what i can from them and go off and just enjoy whatever noise i make., and find some new stuff to listen to and keep learning and enjoying it, That will do for me anyway...who knows where it will end...hopefully it won`t... biggrin.gif
Love, peace and a 1,2,3,4........... laugh.gif

P.S. anyone out there suggest some great listening material, I`m not realy up on my Jazz , but i`m searching out what i can on the net ect...So if anyone out there can recommend some realy good stuff to get into for pleasure and influence then please do. You can email me here - karmamoths@yahoo.co.uk
Cheers all.

Are you still playing trombone Oddball?

No, I didn't get a along with it, but maintained the rareness of my instrument playing by joining a brass band, and playing a flugelhorn...

I tried to learn the Bass Trombone for a few months/year at School when I was about 11 years old. All I remember are a few fleeting memories. I remember struggling to carry it, in its case, onto the bus and nearly knocking everyone on board in the process. I also remember playing in the local youth orchestra a few times...God Knows how I got in!! I was so bad at reading bass clef at the time that I just used to play 4ths and 5ths in the hope that they'd fit in an oom-pah pah kind of style!! biggrin.gif
