Hi

After many many hours I'm close to getting these finished - good job too as my exam is on the 12th!

One last question I am unsure of for LRSM notes and that is regarding giving sources.

The "writing Programme notes" guide says " you are not expected to cite sources of information in detail, but should refer the reader to author's name. It is not appropriate to include a bibliography"

Obviously all the facts I've written are a distillation of my research so they are not tied into a specific source. So how do I 'refer the reader to an author's name" unless I give a bibliography?

For my Dip notes I just put a page at the back saying "sources" and listed out the websites, books, CD's etc I had studied in preparation - but that is really the " bibliography that the guide says isn't appropriate.

I have not used any direct quotes - I realise those would need to be referenced if I had put any in.

Can someone please advise me

thanks heaps

Hmm ... I thought for LRSM we must send the program note along with the application and we just cannot change the program. I must have missed something if you could do that.

Not in the UK. The programme notes are taken along to the exam itself. I'm retaking just my recital in December having got decent marks for the rest of it, and all I have to provide is a list of the pieces I'm playing in the order I'm playing them. I could change my mind up to the night before!

The rules may be different elsewhere, of course.

Best of luck for Monday, musicman! I hope you're happy with the programme notes now.

Do post and tell us how it went.

musicmanNZ: I'm guessing that you're from the land of the long white cloud? Me too, just sat LRSM piano performance yesterday in Christchurch. I wish I've discovered this forum BEFORE my exam as I grappled with the same question about references/sources. I'm glad to see that we weren't supposed to do a biblography as I didn't do one, but wrote things like 'in (Rachmaninov's) biographer von Rieseman's words...' followed by a quote. I hope that's all that was required.

How did you find the exam? I'm keen to compare notes with a fellow LRSM candidate. I was feeling OK when I finished my recital but the more I think about it the more uncertain I become. I finished with the Rach Prelude 23/5 with a few rough patches; managed to hold it together without losing continuity but not sure how severely penalised I'll be for inaccuracies. Otherwise a couple of fluffs in each piece but no major disasters. I thought the viva and QS were quite fair, although with more close-ended/factual questions than I expected.

Looks like you had a good programme - I hope you've done well!
