Can anyone explain to me, in very small words, exactly how to set up a broadband connection? I'm supposed to be moving into my house on Sunday (early, so I can work on my essays - looks like that won't happen now sad.gif ) and I thought someone else was setting up the internet stuff. It seems not. I mean I've organised absolutely everything else so, I guess I can do this too.

I have absolutely nothing set up, as it is... And I'm basically technologically illiterate... Any chance anyone can help? How long on average should it take?

Any help would be appreciated...

1. Buy a cat to kick!!
2......

Actually it shouldn't be too hard. The first question though is do you have a broadband connection in the house?

Assuming that exists then a certain amount depends on your Internet Service Provider and the type of equipment you are installing. If it is a modem (a little box 'twixt computer and wall socket) it ought to be a fairly simple plug and play issue. If you are using a router (bigger box, several outlets for several computers and possibly wireless too) that needs configuring in accordance with your ISPs requirements.

You ought to be able to get set up details from your ISPs web site (if you can get to it of course) and possibly they provided you with a set up disc.

We are with Orange and I seem to remember they did most of the hard stuff.Basically all we had to do was plug in the live box. Follow some instructions and push some buttons.... Totally non-technical eh? blush.gif

Yip, as long as you're with an ISP that provides the router you should be ok... there are a lot of "wires only" packages (which I got) which will require you to source your own hardware. Not really recommended for non-technical people smile.gif

Thanks guys. I've provisioned the phone line now, so I have to wait til Wednesday or Thursday when it's activated but then I can sort it out. O2 seems to have the best deal. And yes, they provide the router, so I don't have to worry about my total lack of any technical skill too much. smile.gif

I might've been a bit harsh on my flatmates too, only one of them was even a little bit awkward and we probably all thought someone else was doing it. rolleyes.gif

Meh, learn to push the blame on to someone else anyway... it's a useful life skill! laugh.gifsmile.gif

laugh.gif I think I've got it down, but the guilt always makes me admit the truth to myself after a while. Very inconvenient, consciences are. tongue.gif rolleyes.gif

PS I'm manifestly not packing though, so obviously guilt isn't too limiting for me.

Yeah the conscience thing is a pain. I must try to get rid of mine on eBay at some point! tongue.gif

You're going to be the one suffering, staying up late if you don't get that packing done! biggrin.gif
