I'm sure someone will give you a more technical answer but I always think about the melodic minor as starting with a minor third and then doing the rest of the octave going up as the major scale, it is different on the way down and follows the minor key signature (since joining this forum I've learned that this is called the natural minor.

A B C D E F# G# A
way down
A G F E D C B A
If you have never done them before it is probably worth investing in the ABRSM scale book, it isn't that pricey and has all the scale pattern in up to grade 8 plus recommended speeds.
In legato tongueing is what it says on the tin really, tongue each note but don't separate them as you do for the staccato version.
