Full Version: I've Ordered A Sopranino Sax! Yey!

Hi,

Due to being a bit of a rebel, i've just ordered a sopranino sax and am so excited! For the last 2 years I've borrowed a tutor's one at the Nottingham saxday, but this time I can take my own!

I do realise that I will sound ghastly for some time and have my tuner at the ready from the moment it arrives. I only really bought it for novelty value really, but am also curious as to its possibilities too.

Anyone else play a nino?

p.s you'll know when it arrives as there'll be a sudden exodus from Derbyshire no doubt!

No, no, no - not a nino!!!

Having no desire to play even a soprano I must admit that the thought of a 'nino fills me with horror! Having said that, the one time a week I'm an alto rather than a tenor player I do appreciate just how much easier it is to cart round - surely you could fit a 'nino in your handbag?! laugh.gif

Have fun with it!

I'd love to hear a nino! I've got a soprano (which I haven't yet learnt how to play rolleyes.gif) and I love the higher registers on both sax and clarinet.

Will you be playing classical or jazz on it? smile.gif

I had a try of one once : it does have tuning issues if you're not careful, but yes, it does make a lovely sound. Enjoy! biggrin.gif

Emsoboe would love one laugh.gif If you ever meet I'm sure she'll be begging a go.

Enjoy playing it!

What I'm hoping (off topic, sorry), is that a stall at the Saxophone Day will have a soprillo to try on it... biggrin.gif

But (unless you're Nigel Wood) its not a musical instrument; it's a shrieking candle-snuffer.

It belonged to a customer so they didn't have it for very long. They did seem to have enjoyed meeting it though laugh.gif

biggrin.gif I like that!!! I really can't see me ever going to the extreme's of a Soprillo, but Nigel Wood does do a fantastic job doesn't he?

It's wierd how we tend to favour one end of the spectrum isn't it? I play alto and sop sax, clarinet, flute, piano, and EWI and favour the middle to high ranges in all of those. I tried tenor sax but just couldn't bond with it, I just didn't like the lower sound, although I appreciate listening to it, but personally couldn't enjoy play it!

If there's one of those I'm not going!

saxgirl - I get what you're saying about preferring high or low end, and that does seem to be the way it works in classical music. For jazz it seems to be more preferring Bb or Eb. There are tons of tenor/soprano players, and some (albeit fewer) alto/baritone players but there don't seem to be so many alto/tenor players even though those are the most common saxes.

Not sure that's true - though I do remember Courtney Pine saying he couldn't get on with Eb instruments (he does play a bit of alto now).

I'm a rare alto/baritone ...

The nino arrived yesterday, and it's gorgeous!!! I positioned it on a spare peg next to my soprano and told the 2 young students who came for lessons that the sop had had a baby! (I have added a blog to my website that speaks of such! ; http://www.keridegg.co.uk/blog/read_7070/t...has-landed.html

It surprised me that it sounds pretty mellow for a tiny thing, although I need to get some reeds tomorrow as the one supplied is really soft and not great. I'll also be upgrading the mouthpiece sooner than later too.

A friend of mine had a go too, he's a real tenor sax man who would usually scoff at such things, but he really liked it and preffered playing it to his soprano!

Just thought i'd let you know it's arrived, and is great fun!

Happy tootling, (or squeaking in my case!) laugh.gif

Beth is also desperate for one. But she is have a new flute in two weeks time and a soprano sax will have to wait, probably after she gets a piccollo

It's a "nino" smaller than a Sop that the op has bought. We have a Soprano in mind when the time comes to buy one (if ever). Can't even think about it until we've sorted the Cor biggrin.gif. even then there are probably other things she will need in the next year that will take presidence.
