What are the requirements to be a participant?
Some say you have to at least a distinction in grade 6, some say grade 5. Some say you have to audition.

Is it possible for other regions to attend the summer school? (I'm from Asia)

Must I prepare I piece before I go?

Please answer and Thank you! smile.gif

I think the main requirement is speed off the mark. Get your application in as soon as the dates are announced!!

I missed out last year through being too slow with my application sad.gif , but those who went tell me that all standards of player are welcome. Ther is definitely no audition. I am pretty sure there is no restriction on visitors from overseas, so long as you have the right passport and visa to get into the UK. As for preparation , I would have thought that anyone going for a few lessons and a masterclass (and maybe even playing a recital) would WANT to specially prepare two or three pieces in advance.

But the organizers are very friendly and will quickly answer all your questions by email. You can post your questions from their website's contact page here: http://www.pianosummerschool.com/ContactForm

For the Adult amateur course the main thing is enthusiasm.
I think that this year the levels of participants was something like from grade 5 upwards.
This year was my first year and now I've seen how things are I'd look to have something like one piece in the learning stage for lessons, a piece more or less 'finished' for the workshop a piece for performance on the last day (probably something just for fun rather than something towards the limits of my ability) and maybe a couple of other small things for informal playing to each other sessions.
I'd take my clarinet again as I did find people happy to play accompaniments. smile.gif
The whole thing really is friendly and do email as Mad Tom suggested if you have anything you'd like to know as they are very willing to help.

I've been for one week each of the last 2 years:

For your questions, firstly there is the question of standard: They do like to have participants of a certain standard (who can blame them) but the standard is both variable and potentially negotiable. My first year they were asking for at least distinction grade 6 or equivalent - I only had a pass at grade 5 (and that 35 years before) but they took me anyway. The second year they were asking for grade 5 or equivalent (but by then I had grade 8). Next year, who knows (as MadTom has said, you could email them directly), though with only one week next year they might decide to be a bit choosy. That would be unlike them though: What seems to matter most is attitude and enthusiasm. There are no auditions, definitely.

All areas of the world are represented. Mostly UK, naturally, but I can think of participants from Holland, Greece, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai: I'm quite sure there are others!

As for preparation, the first year I went I had just coasted through the summer and had nothing prepared - just a couple of pieces that I had only just started and my exam pieces, not played since the exam 2 months before. The second year (this year) I had several pieces that I had worked on for ages and polished so that I could play in both a master-class and a short recital. Neither approach was wrong, I got a lot out of both and (most important) nobody else minded provided the attitude was right.

If I can get my application in on time I'm going next year: I live close enough that I can take it in the same day I receive it and deliver it by hand so if it's first come first served I stand as good a chance as any.

Yisian_17, as I see you're 13, you won't be concerned with the adult course. You really need to wait for next year's brochure (usually out about January & available on the website) to see what the requirements are for next year (they do vary a bit from year to year). This year the minimum standard was grade 5 distinction for the main piano course (which is all ages), but there was also a Young Pianists course for less advanced children. You will also need a reference from your teacher.

People come from all over the world. The main thing is to apply apply early, especially as next year will be only one week & is bound to be over-subscribed. You need to prepare some repertoire certainly, to benefit fully from your lessons & particularly if you want to take part in a masterclass or recital (which can be just one piece if you like, or anything up to an hour). I would try to have at least 2 or 3 pieces prepared as well as possible.

It's a wonderful course & everyone is made to feel very welcome.
