Facebook

I have a group of friends from around the world, whom I have known for many years. Over the last year or so they have been trying to encourage me to join Facebook.

I am now a member and have added a fair few of my friends to my Facebook page.
Apart from that I haven't got a clue how any of it works. There seems to be no help program available within Facebook. Can any of you recommend a very simplistic (A BC type book as I don't need to get a degree in it) book, or websites that I can, either buy, or look at? wacko.gif
I thought I was pretty cool getting an iPod,, but Facebook seems far more complicated. I sort of need-to-know how to divide my friends up into groups i.e. chef friends, sailing friends, karate friends etc. For the life of me I can't figure it out.

HELP

Regards

David

Facebook is eeeeeevil. wacko.gif

Don't let it become a timesink - I know far too many people who spend nearly all their spare time on it!

I don't post loads of photos of me rolling around in my own vomit or in compromising situations on here though! laugh.gif And I don't take pride in the fact that I have 1,318 "friends" that I never actually see wink.gif

Check out the security/privacy settings asap. It is alarming how much information is put on there and is publicly available eg to prospective employers. Be very careful.

Unfortunately Facebook and similar sites have been used for cyber-bullying with very serious consequences in some cases sad.gif

You mean you would if you were on Facebook? It's not obligatory you know.

Me neither. I look a bit like "Billy No Mates" on Facebook but I think it's quite a nice way of keeping in touch, having a bit of banter, etc.

Not likely, I was just being sarcastic from an observational perspective. When I've seen a few friends logged on there it's just all drunken/embarassing pictures, which isn't my style. I like to keep a low online profile as far as my personal details and what I'm up to are concerned wink.gif

I use phone, text, email, MSN, or even an amazing social networking site called "The Pub" for that smile.gif I do kind of think that all these online social networking things are causing people to stop making time for each other in real life.

On the other hand, they're great for keeping you in touch when you're miles apart. My daughter, who works in Moscow, can keep in touch with her old uni friends through Facebook. And when she's coming home for a week or two, she can organise in advance when to see people.

The trouble with Russia is that the post is virtually non-existent, so internet is the only easy way to keep in touch with those in the UK.

I have become re-acquainted with a couple of cousins of mine that I hadn't been in touch with for nearly 30 years - one lives in Australia. Think this is fantastic, wouldn't have been able to do this without facebook

Also a support forum group from summer school - it is great.

What I can't be doing with either is setting up loads of photos or those notifications that come through asking you to do some sort of game.

I love Facebook! biggrin.gif
The only way to really figure out how to work it is trial and error I'm afraid. My Canadian friend urged me to get it last year and I was clueless and had no idea how to work it! But just by fiddling around with it I'm now addicted to it and have my own farm and pet! biggrin.gif Haha sad I know but I love it, and It's great for keeping in touch with old school friends etc....

I find I'm using facebook more than MSN nowadays. I'll be deleting MSN soon I think.

If you bring up your friends list you can create separate lists to sort your freinds into categories.
I just discovered this the other day.

Off topic a bit. But has anyone else received a facebook message like this?
QUOTE

Facebook is recently becoming very overpopulated, there have been many members complaining that Facebook is becoming very slow. Records show that the reason is that there are too many non-active Facebook members and, on the other side, too many new Facebook members.
We will be sending this message around to see if members are active or not. If you are active please send to at least 15 other users using Copy+Paste to show that you are still active. Those who do not send this message within 2 weeks will be deleted without hesitation to create more space.

Send this message to all your friends and to show me that you're still active and you will not be deleted.

I've received it from two different people. Is it a scam, or not???

Why would it be bad if it was a scam? I understand they might get information from your freinds, but it would be just as easy as picking people at random.

Some idiot is hoping that millions of people will send this at least 15 times to friends, hence clogging up the servers, causing things to slow down. If the site owners wanted some info from you, they would do it via a pop up survey box or something, not by monitoring your friends' inboxes! smile.gif

It's a bit like the: "Send this chain letter to at least 30 people in the next 0.8 seconds, otherwise a child in africa will die from bubonic plague and you will be raped by a mad, rabid goat in your sleep!" emails that do the rounds.. rolleyes.gif

I love facebook and spend far too much time on it! I keep in touch with my cousins, my sister who lives in Canada, and several people I knew from a band course I went on as a teenager. I have caught up with my god daughters- one of whom lives in Canada too... and it's cool-I can see pictures of one of my god daughter's children. I can chat to the one in Canada about what her prom- having seen her pictures.
We went to a cousin's wedding this year- and could share photos via facebook really quickly!
You have to remember it's a public forum and think before you put anything on your wall!

On the plus side, I can keep in touch easily with my friends at home, and learn more about the people I'm at uni with so... thumbs up from me. smile.gif
