Full Version: New String Group In West London

Would anyone here be interested in joining a new string ensemble in the Hammersmith/West Kensington area? Minimum standard is grade 3. It's a friendly and enjoyable group. The person who runs it used to teach strings at a rather prestigious school, so has a lot of experience at coaxing music out of those who haven't yet acquired very much skill. And he's very patient.

See the website here, or PM me if you have questions.

I've been looking for a string orchestra in the SE/BR/DA/CR areas to possibly join once I'm a little better at 'cello...there appears to be very little/nothing out there unless you're at least grade 6...does anyone know of anywhere?...

Hi - I posted a couple of weeks ago about the South London String orchestra which meets on a Friday morning - the website is http://www.southlondonstrings.org.uk/index.html.

It seems to be a mixture of older folk who have played for a while and some adult learners. My teacher sent me off this morning to buy music from the grade 4 syllabus smile.gif and I can just cope with all of the music, with the odd dodgy moment, but you can bring it home to practise. There are about 15ish in the orchestra.

that's a good one for me (for the day I retire! I work 6 days a week, only have 3 hours free time in the evenings) sad.gif

thanks for sharing anyway as it may be well helpful to someone else smile.gif

Looks good : the big worry I'd have with that group though is the likelihood that I'd have to leave as soon as I joined sad.gif . I'm not teaching at the moment then, but the odds are I would be at some stage in the future. Really I'd need something in the evening...

I know a group with a training orchestra grade 3+ however they meet in Marylybone so probably no good. PM me if you want details. I was briefly with their main orchestra which is grade 5+.

I'm nowhere near grade 3 yet, and Marylebone is do-able-ish, but really I'd want something closer (SE, DA or BR postcode, ideally, possibly CR at a stretch). I'll let you know VH smile.gif

Hi Barry, it doesn't quite meet your criteria, but have you looked at ELLSO's Intermediate Performance Orchestra? It meets at St Mary with Holy Trinity Church in Bow which is next to Bow Church DLR stop (so north of the river, but easy to access from Lewisham etc.)

It is a nice friendly little ensemble that you should be able to join in a few months (weeks?!).

They meet on a Monday evening from 7.15-9.30pm.

Maybe that might work for you?

Enjoy your playing!

Thanks for that Lis : I think I'm a long way from that level yet (only clocked up 3 lessons so far!), but I'll add it to my possibilities smile.gif
