Is it hard to get the note exactly right? Do you sometimes get it a little to sharp or flat? Is there set positions??

Hehe, sorry for all the questions.. unsure.gif

After consulting with my friends brother (a trombonist) I have discovered that mostly it's due to muscular memory... but he says it's not too hard to pick up.

The positions are roughly set, you do just get to know them from memory after a bit though, and you always have to make tiny tuning adjustments smile.gif
DrumKat
Same as every instrument; you just get used to it!

That is why trombonists are a class above the rest!! biggrin.gif

From watching my daughter (cello and tromobne) I don't think it's any harder than with a stringed instrument and possibly easier to begin with as for the first two positions which she learnt her teacher told her what to line the slide up with, so you have a visual reminder.

Did your daughter not have a visual reminder for the cello in the form of the little stickers that are put on the neck of the cello?

For the first year no. Then her teacher went on maternity leave and the second teacher did put stickers on.

I think you need a very god sense of pitch to play the trombone

You need a good sense of pitch to play any blown wind or bowed string (even the fretted ones) in an ensemble.

I vary my position all the time so as to keep in tune with other instrumentalists.
