Just interested in how far people can stretch (over keys that is, not in some sexual Karma Sutra-ish way)

I can stretch from a C to the E above the next C above it, so basically 10 keys...

Helen
a 9th. Although an arrangment of pachabels cannon that I have uses 12ths!

Ah. Everyone seems to be using steps.

I can stretch the equivelant of a 16th.

Man, I must have beasty hands. unsure.gif

16th??
you got to be joking man...
that's like 2octaves and 1 note!!
I can only play a major 9th..... sad.gif
pianoplayer
I can stretch from C to E easily, C to F with some difficulty.
elmo
an octave sad.gif
cheeble
an octave, a ninth at a push. i have mini hands
lafrog
An octave usually but depending on configuration can be more or less - for example I can't always play cleanly a series of fast octaves, yet I can stretch usually one more for a major 9th if it's a one off...
Remember though that some of the greatest did not necessarily have huge hands...
cecilia
I can stretch a ninth with some difficulty. I think my hands must be a similar size to Cheeble's.

wooohooo!!! *dances around* we should start a mini-hands club!!!

and I agree with lafrog, you don't need huge hands to be a good pianist.
Oddball
OK, then I mean 16 half-steps... a C to an E...

Student
From middle C to the upper D or E. biggrin.gif
czaire
only an octave..
charlie29588
i can only just stretch an octave as well....i did my grade 8 exam today and i had to apologise to the examiner for not being able to stretch to all the notes in the last chords of one of my pieces.......i thought it was quite amusing really....though im not sure she would agree but we'll see in 2 weeks time wink.gif
liebe_klavier
C to E is extremely comfy...in odd occation a tenth....
Nocturne
Usually a ninth. When i try really hard sometimes a half more.
tay774a
I can stretch from a C to a C/D/E depending on how badly i want to play the notes!:P

isabelsmells
An octave, just about.
nutter

jess smile.gif
zoda
I can stretch from middle C to the B two octaves and a seventh above.

(have I remembered right - that rule about "no elbows" is just in rock climbing isn't it?)
Rainbow
An octave normally. Sometimes a ninth but with difficulty.

Well, unless you regularly play piano with your elbows... unsure.gif

yay!!!!! i have mini hands 2!!! who wants 2 join the mini hands club? i can sretch a 9th too.
Oddball
I've just tried something. The distance from the base of my hand to the tips of my fingers is that same length that i can stretch. Is this the same for everyone??

ambi
By stretch did you mean forcing it by wedging your little finger against a key then stretching as far as you can, or being able to land your thumb & little finger on the notes without preparation, and not sounding adjacent notes?

ohmy.gif
Sotto Voce
I can stretch an octave easily and a ninth a little less easily.
Katet
I can do an octave fairly easily, and a ninth, with a few extra notes... huh.gif
tHe PiAnO mAn
I can stretch a 10th relatively easily and an 11th if i really try (but it hurts sad.gif ) Icouldn't play an 11th in a piece though coz i gotta prepare for it.

I must have massive hands or something.

If small-hand people get a club I think big handed people should to.

Interesting fact that I can stretch an octave from my 1st finger (thumb) to my 2nd finger. My other fingers just don't stretch quite as far. dry.gif
practice makes perfect
easily an octave - just about a ninth if i really push it!
luke43
Can stretch a 9th quite comfortably a 10th with a struggle

Good point - if it is playing the 2 notes separately, then C to D on the right, C to E on the left (though I am right handed). Simultaneously it is as I said in my previous post, and reliably, an octave on the right but C to D on the left.
davidyko
a ninth, almost a tenth...i can get the corner of a 10th

Same here. Frustrating!!!

WELL, I had quite literally the smallest hands belonging to a Pianist, I think my whole body is out of proportion, Im 5ft 5, size 8.5 feet, and i can only JUST stretch an octave..i am TINY, and it has caused many problems, especially now im doing grade8 piano, and there are quite some nice boig stretches for my baby hands to reach..oh well!

Bloody ######! They say the distance from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your index finger means something... can for the LIFE thing of what it is tho...

violinandpianogurl
i can stretch a 9th, sometimes a 10th
Keys
A 9th for me. That's only my right hand though and it's only on good days.
saxlover
an 8ve im ok with. a 9th sometimes if theres no notes in between
sarah-flute
an octave without much difficulty, and a 9th OK, but not a 10th. a 9th is just a totally useless interval, isn't it??! lol...
PlinkPlonkMan
Hello
An octave easily and play without touching other keys. A 9th at a push.
Bye Mike
flutieplayer
can do major 9th fairly easily now, but not a 10th,
all depends on the size of your hands tho. it amazes me wen u see tiny little pianists playin such big pieces i wonder how they can stretch their hands lol?
nicki_flute
Mine are tiny *joins small hand club*, so a 9th is a no-no, an octave is managable. smile.gif
jstark
A 10th for me, but I don't think I could play double tenths at speed in both hands...

My hands stopped growing when I was about 14

So agreed

I can, in a pinch (or is that a stretch?) reach a ninth

Although, if the notes don't have to be connected or played at the same time I can play to or from any of the 88 notes on the piano...lol
saxlover
can i join the mini hands club?!! i'll let you join my cant do aural club, might not work if u either can do aural/like aurals!
oddy
an octave. im only 5"2 with hands to match sad.gif

*mutters* never wanted to play big intervals anyways.....*sulksulksulk*
