ok so i did gr5 theory bout a month ago (100%!) & now since i'm a theory freak i wanna continue to gr6. what book/s should i get? up to now, i've just used the Lina Ng series, which i think r really good. but, many ppl recommend the ABRSM theory in practice (or sumthing) instead. is this better?

went to the music shop, lina gr6 was like this thick --> |---------------|
and abrsm was this thick --> |----|

What is lina 6 , where is it available, sorry I am in Oman how to order and get this. If you say it is good I want to get all the grades from 1 to 8 grades. I following ABRSM and I have not heard of this and not available in any shop in Oman

I haven't heard of the Lina Ng series either, but if you got 100% they must be good smile.gif
I didn't take grade 6 theory but I am working for grade 8, I have used the AB Music Theory in Practice grades 6, 7 and 8 and also Harmony in Practice by Anna Butterworth (the big orange one!)... but then if you don't like thick books that might be a bad thing...

...it's about as thick as you say your Lina gr6 is...

Lina Ng is the author of a series of books called 'theory of music made easy'. ok, so i got the theory in practice, have had a look through & seems VERY dry!
Petite Joueuse
You could try Josephine Koh - she seems to break things down into smaller steps than the Theory in Practice books. I used her book and got a respectable Merit after about 9 months of study. I'd recommend her

I think Lina Ng's books are only available in Asia.

Currently, I'm using Josphine koh's grade 6 theory book. Not too bad, lot of exercise for you to practise & resonable price.

You can get them in the UK.

I'm very surprise!

You can get them online from St George's music.

I had forgotten that we can order online.

Personally, I think that at grade 6 you need to either already have the prerequisite knowledge (and therefore use a book like Music Theory in Practice to refresh your memory) or get a teacher.

I did the former and found Music Theory in Practice and past papers (which I looked at myself at the end) very useful.

Better now to get the 'Theory Workbook' with the big '6' on the front.
This deals with the syllabus as it is now.
And of course past papers.
I would say that it is best to get a teacher to check your harmony and composition though.

Oh...I would highly recommend Anna Butterworth's Harmony in Practice. This book wins it hands down! It's quite pricey though and you might have to fork out a little more than other books that are targeted specifically at Grade 6 students, but this book will definitely give you a fantastic foundation in harmony. Not forgetting the fact that you can use this book to study up to Grade 8 in the future! The exercises inside are guided exercises...so you'll master the harmony needed in grade 6 in no time at all.

man! I sound like an ad!

anyway, you should consider using the ABRSM publication as well. The white book with the green "6" on the cover. That book is very good as in zooms in on how to tackle the questions. Very useful.

With these two books, I scored a remarkable 93 for my Grade 6! =)) You should use them too!

Good luck!

I love it too, but it weighs a ton in my bag along with the Edexcel A Level anthology! laugh.gif

i don't like the theory in practice book for grade 6, i don't find it user friendly.

I got the Anne Butterworth book (and accompanying answer book), and it looks great. But so far I haven't even started it. Maybe this should be my new year resolution! Roughly how long does it take to study the Grade 6 syllabus to take it and pass well?

I did it in a little under a year. 91%.

Well done!

So, if I pull my finger out, I could be looking at next December or failing that Spring next year. I honestly don't think I could do it any quicker with the other commitments I've got.
