Full Version: Repeats In Classical Sonatas

For a Diploma recital should you play all the repeats, none of the repeats or just some? If just some, which ones?

It occurs to me that repeats do nothing in themselves to demonstrate your technique & skill so may be safely omitted. On the other hand, a repeat may be an important part of the structure of the sonata and so should not be omitted.

Balancing these two ideas it occurred to me that the Haydn sonata I'm learning has many repeats written. I propose to play all the repeats in the first movement as that seems to be an intrinsic part of the structure. In the second movement there is one repeat that has a different bar a the end of the section on the repeat so I think that has to be played. Apart from that I propose to play the second and third movements without any other repeats (though this is an idea in development and I can be persuaded either way).

I wondered if anyone had any constructive thoughts on this question?

I had the same dilemma with a Haydn sonata, and the second movement specifically, because of the bar that was different when playing the repeat. I didn't play the repeat in the exam, purely because my teacher advised against it, but I always felt that the movement was nicer with it! (Is it in Eb? The hands crossing bit?) (Incidentally, I didn't play any repeats at all... If anything, I'd be more inclined to play a shorter repeat, which the one I'm thinking of is, rather than long ones.)
