Did the LRSM piano diploma used to be called LRAM?

A few months ago I was talking to my grandad who is now 71. He played piano up to grade 8 which he reached when he was 13, and he said that he would've gone on to take his "LRAM" by stopped because his parents put a stop to his piano lessons one year when he refused to play for the guests on New Years Day. (mean parents tongue.gif )

So my question is, did it used to be called LRAM or is his senile mind just getting mixed up? biggrin.gif

No - he is not mixed up biggrin.gif The LRAM was specifically a diploma from the Royal Academy of Music and the LRSM is a relatively new diploma re all the Royal Schools of Music (of which there are four I think). Someone else will come along with more detailed info I expect as I'm not sure which diplomas were available to external music students in the old days.

I think he might have had to go through an Associate dip first though smile.gif

As far as I understand the ABRSM originally awarded the LAB diploma (Licentiate of the Associated Board); the LRSM (Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music) was originally introduced for overseas students as an equivalent to the ARCM (Associate of the Royal College of Music) and the LRAM (Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music).

In recent years, the diplomas of ARCM, DipRCM, LRSM (for overseas candidates) and LRAM have all been combined and replaced by the LRSM as it now stands. The LRAM is still available to internal RAM students. The DipABRSM and FRSM were introduced around 2000 I think. As I understand it, the DipABRSM replaced the Advanced Certificate. There was of course the GRSM diploma (Graduate of the Royal Schools of Music) for those who had completed the three year full-time course.

You are incorrect David! The RCM discontinued the ARCM diploma and no diploma has ever been combined. The ABRSM developed three new levels for worldwide use

I remember the LRAM qualification either teaching or performance still being around at the end of the 1970's
as I started preparing for it back then , never took it as A levels and then university got in the way and in fact have not taken a music exam since grade 8 in 1978

15-20 years ago people can take LRSM right after Grade 8 practical annd theory. There was no requirement for Dip as a prerequisite.

But I dare say that, looking at syllabi taken from a few decades ago, the same pieces which were listed on the syllabus for Grade 8 around 20 years ago now appear on the DipABRSM.... I know most of my diploma items did, cos I have old editions of them with 'Grade 8' pencilled in at the top.... blush.gif

Or we can say, all ABRSM members are still remains and you can still apply for it. Forum members mentioned RCM, RAM are still here and have never discontinue. However, the RSM diplomas are just the combine standards of the AB members.
