Full Version: How To Find Someone To Mark Theory Papers Only?

How can I find someone to provide just marking for theory practice papers? They don't particularly need to be local as I could post the papers and get them mailed back. All the practice papers and theory in practice workbooks are fair enough except that there are no answers (obviously impractical for compositions, etc.) and it's hard to know exactly what someone is looking for in choice of chords and structure of a composition. Yes there are guidelines, but how do you judge the extent to which you have understood the guidelines with only your own say-so that you think you did OK? I don't have a teacher (of any instrument or of theory) so there is literally nobody to ask, and I am not looking for a teacher, just a marker. If I can already get a passing mark in G6 theory I'll take it, if I can't then I will do something different, it's just rather more straightforward a path if I can do the G6 theory, but it's not worthwhile working towards it if I don't already know the stuff because I can just do different work that more directly supports the same end goal on a different path. If that makes any sense!! laugh.gif

So how would you go looking for someone to mark theory papers and what would you expect it to cost to have someone mark the whole book of however many specimen papers are in the current book?

A rather laborious way would be to look for a theory teacher on www.musicteachers.co.uk. I'm not sure what would be the best terms to search for, other than "Theory" in the Instruments box and maybe DipABRSM in the Keywords box.

Alternatively perhaps you could invite suitably qualified forum members to contact you by PM to discuss it. I don't think this would be against the rules unsure.gif

If you are doing the most recent of the past papers then there are model answers published, so you can check the answers yourself. As far as I'm aware there are no answers for the Theory in Practice book Grade 6.

It sounds to me as though you don't just want someone to mark papers, you also want advice as to whether you are making the right choices of chords, and guidance in what's needed for the composition question, and for that there's no substitute for a teacher. As skylark says try musicteachers.co.uk for someone. If there's no one in your area try further afield; perhaps you'll find someone who does long distance learning for theory, or maybe someone on this forum does it. Good luck.

You can and you can't. If you've put something different then a model answer doesn't help you to understand if what you put is an acceptable alternative or not. I am 99% sure I have it OK or I would not have passed Musicianship 1A or my A level in music theory, however it's always useful to make sure that what you think you understand is actually what you have understood.

Nope. I want to know if what I can already do is enough to pass the paper or not, and if not then I shall do a completely different course rather than the DipABRSM and I won't need to do grade 6 theory at all. The place I am in is will I pass without doing any work at all, yes or no. Because if not then there is more than one direction to go in. The Dip is cheaper overall, but only if I don't need any theory lessons or materials.

I appear to have completely misunderstood your initial post despite reading it several times before replying.

RoseRodent,

I've sent you a brief P.M. on the topic... smile.gif

Thank you guys, I have some offers now. Excuse me if I am a tad slow getting back to everyone because I now got my email back from AB and it's still as clear as mud whether or not they will accept my university transcripts. Basically if you do a whole degree in music it's easy, if you do a degree in music with education or music and history or whatever (in my case music, education and Russian!) then they have to go through and pick out which bits are which, but technically that comes under "professional experience" which expires after 5 years, so I have to apply for a substitution. Given that I have this substitution it should mean that if I do have to go grade 6 it's just a formality of strolling in and sitting the paper, but it's all starting to get very tight up against the closing dates for decisions and paperwork to go back and forth.

So I shall hold tight for the wee mo and wee what happens next.

Cheers. smile.gif smile.gif

There is also this option if you decide to go down the 'theory by correspondence' route.
