just wondering if you would miss your lesson due to a bad head cold. I play piano, i love my music and don't want to miss it. but at the same time, I am all blocked up, i'm coughing a fair bit, and i am not sure my teacher would want me coming. What would you do?

I wouldn't go - doesn't mean you can't play.

Get better soon.

You'll have to get in contact with your teacher to cancel...so why not ask them? They may not want someone snotty and infectious around, but on the other hand they may say it's OK with them if it's OK with you.
And if it's not OK for the lesson to go ahead, then you can still have that time for piano playing.

Speaking from a teacher's point of view, it's good when someone rings and gives you the choice of saying yes or no, I usually say yes with a cold as long as the pupil feels ok themselves - I've had a couple at school recently who looked as if they might expire and fall off the stool before the half hour is up and am sure they haven't gained much from the lesson anyway.
I always say no if someones been sick however...

I did have a cold once when I had a lesson. Teacher did not know in advance, I just told him when he arrived. he did not get ill as a result.

If you just have a runny nose and a headache I would still go to the lesson. If it is anything more than that explain why you will be absent.

I did once miss a lesson because of a stomach ache and a temperature.

Thank you all. I am feeling fine. No head ache just a cough now and still a bit blocked. Rang my teacher and she said it was fine.

Tis the season to be poorly! We sell loads of meds at work (pharmacy) that help. Nothing cures a cold, but you can help relieve symptoms. Paracetamol will help regulate your temperature as well as kill pain, and is safe to use with ibuprofen if one isn't quite doing the trick. To help your nose, pseudoephedrine (found only behind the counter in a pharmacy) works really well, better than the useless cold things you can get from supermarkets and the like lol! You can get strong numbing sprays and lozenges behind the counter for sore throats too. There are loads of thing you can use to relieve symptoms to enable you to go to lessons, work, college etc (if it is a cold you should be fine, flu is a very different matter!!!)

Obviously check with doc or pharmacist before buying ANYTHING over the counter though, as things that help colds and flu also interact with a lot of meds and can cause problems with people who have other health problems.

I personally would go to the lesson if my teacher was alright with me coming and being ill.

When i was 10 i had a cough for months. My teacher would spray disinfectant on the piano keys after each lesson.

I wouldn't go simply because if I did I would risk infecting my teacher and other students. Colds don't usually last all that long so if it's just one or two lessons....
