Sparked by a scary film conversation had in another thread... ph34r.gif

Like I said in the other thread, the scariest ones for me are the psychological ones, like Amityville or the Exorcist. The ones with ghosts or spirits. But the BEST 'scary' movies - which I don't find at all scary - are ones like Alien or Resident Evil.

What are the scariest or best scary movies you've ever seen?

Ooh, I'm not very good with scary films, funnily enough they scare me!

I'm more... fascinated by them. Curious. Hahaaa. Especially about Saw. I went on the ride at Thorpe Park and got a bit nervous/ fidgety/talkative in the queue. But the actual ride was I N C R E D I B L E!!!!!! In the queue there were like manikins in torture contraptions though, and a few icky models of dead people.

So this intrigued me, and I ended up reading a full plot summary of each film on the internet, and they were interesting in a weird way. It's like you want to know more, but really don't at the same time. I went to this museum once, and it had real old torture thingies too, with descriptions, and at the science museum there was that assisted suicide machine. They all fascinate me...

I came home and researched all of the SAW movies, and read each of the plot summaries, which I thought were very cool.

Mum has forebode me from watching them though, along with the exorcist, so that's annoying sad.gif I get very scared though. My parents made me watch the first 3 Indiana Jones when I was about 4. It freaked me out A LOT, and to make it worse, my dad and older sister kept pretending to remove my heart, with handfuls of strawberry jam when I was asleep at night. They thought it was hilarious dry.gif

Then I watched "what lies beneath" and got very scared of the bathroom.

But recently I've watched a few mild ones, like the village, sixth sense, hide and seek etc. They were all good fun smile.gif

And of mirrors, windows, blank TV screens, screams, clown and ventriloquist dummies. My sister used to be terrified of doors, and she would count the doors in every house she went into! laugh.gif

Umm, just a bit blush.gif I don't know why they do, they're just interesting in a disturbing way, like a horror film. My teachers all think I'm mental after I did an English oral on assisted suicide, then went on to mention each method and effects in intricate detail.

I'm scared of the bathroom too! I get myself very worked up over things. I hate manikins and models, like in madame tussauds there is this taxi ride I went on with my friends, going through the history of london, with all these horrible moving models. I hid through most of it, and refused to go to the london dungeons. And I used to HATE HATE HATE the dragon ride at legoland because they had these model men which moved ph34r.gif

As soon as I was about 12 or so, I was left by my parents every saturday to babysit my two younger sisters, while they went out on the town and returned around 1am.

So I saw most of the old horror movies and suffered as any teenager would....ie shrug them off as silly, but deep down, wished I hadn't seen them. ph34r.gif

But occasionally......

There was a b/w movie about two young girls messing around with the phone one evening. They kept phoning people and saying "we know what you've done!" By chance, they phoned a real killer who then tricked them into revealing who they were and..... I had to turn off the TV, I was so %#&$^ scared!!

The other one was the old bw movie where the people were in a haunted house and kept hearing children inside the empty nursery and the air kept going cold outside the room.

The truth is that special effects and blood everywhere is nowhere as effective as a good story, good acting and atmosphere!

Not a film, but last year in a Spanish lesson, the teacher read a horror story to us in Spanish and then translated it. Quite a scary story, but the way the teacher was trying to make it scary just made it funny. She wasn't exactly the best at telling horror stories! laugh.gif

It's definitely scarier without the special effects and all... but I find it hard to enjoy things if I'm too scared. 'The Ring' was borderline scary for me - I can't listen to Shakira at night anymore because that's what I listened to that night after 'The Ring', and now I always associate it with that movie... laugh.gif

Oh, the very first 'Alien' film which I saw in a cinema in London. The claustrophobic atmosphere and sense of panic was something new. There was a scene where a guy was at the junction where four corridors met and the others could see on the radar that something was coming to him.

The second when his flashlight showed the alien, I swear everybody in the cinema jumped out of their seats!

I'll agree that it's a tense film but, as I said to Solari on another thread, I just don't find it scary! I love the Alien movies though, probably because I can watch them without being frightened! Same for Resident Evil - I can't wait for the fourth movie to come out in 2010! woot.gif

I'm also scared of clowns and spiders! I have heard that I'm best off never watching Stephen King's "IT"!! hides.gif

Dead of Night... it's an old B/W film from 1940s with Michael Redgrave, Googie Withers and Mervyn Johns.. It's a psychological drama and has several individual stories within the main story but they are all linked... it's amazing... highly recomended!!

I didn't like watching The Ring 2 in the cinema very much ph34r.gif

These all had me covering my face at some point:
Shallow Grave
The Descent
From Dusk to Dawn
Pan's Labyrinth
Jude the Obscure

This had no effect on me whatsoever:
The Blair Witch Project

This is going back a bit (nearly 40 years!), but I remember watching "Quatermass and the Pit" on TV at Christmas when I was about 9 or 10, and being pretty scared. A couple of years later there was a ghost story on TV at Christmas by the same writer (Nigel Kneale) called "The Stone Tape" - that stuck in my memory for many years.

It was pretty good... you need a large screen to get the effect, though. In the cinema, it felt as if you were there (hence motion sickness/vertigo being reported quite frequently by audiences).

I liked it but think they ruined it a bit. I won't spoil it for you! tongue.gif

I must admit, I really like seeing films at the IMAX. A few examples I've seen there are Dark Knight and the new Star Trek and the experience can't be beaten, IMO smile.gif

I'm toying with getting an HD projector but I think I'll wait until I move smile.gif

I've never been to see a movie at the IMAX! I've seen plenty of 3-D films though (a holiday at Futuroscope took care of that laugh.gif). There was this awesome one where you were in a dome-shaped room and you just sat back and it took you on a journey through space - amazing!

Never seen District 9! I will be sure to check it out. Any movie recommendations are welcome biggrin.gif

I don't watch horror movies: Mostly at the time they leave me unimpressed to say the least. Then at 3 am I wake up screaming - even after really bad B-movies with awful special effects. It's silly.

There was one film though, where even seeing only half the trailer (and that only once) gave me nightmares for weeks, so that probably qualifies as the scariest movie I've ever seen: I can't even remember for certain what it was called but when I googled "films about spiders", "Eight Legged Freaks" was the prime suspect!

The Omen STILL terrifies me...and I'm stooopid enough to watch it every time it's on telly. It's not even the evil child, it's the music and bolt of lightening that appears in all the photos. The Ring comes a close second, I watched that on my own, when it was light outside and had to stop it every so often and watch some regular tv to calm me down. blink.gif

I thought Cloverfield was annoying, not just for juddery camera work. I was praying the camera-man would come a croper for most of it wink.gif

Hmmmm, now do I go hunting for 'Killer Clowns from Outer Space'.....?

Edit: on second thoughts, it looks more silly than scary:

When I was teenager my friend made me sit and watch The Exorcist on a Saturday afternoon with the curtains closed. It took me a long time to get over those nightmares!

Then I 'accidentally' saw The Omen : I had to watch to the end to make sure it had a happy ending ... ohmy.gif

Then recently I saw a TV film called '28 Days' which was just utterly horrific and, as an adult, gave me nightmares for months! I scare very easily and they scared me stupid.

I genuinely do not like horror and saw these films pretty much against my will.... yes I should have left the room but I really didn't know what was coming.... I won't be watching them again.

I wonder if it's an age thing.

I loved horror films in my teens and twenties, but later I realised that I wanted cheering up and entertaining.

These days, although I'll read all sorts of books, I will not commit myself to watching a film unless it's a comedy, sci-fi or at least not terribly sad.

The scariest movies for me at the moment are the home movies of junior when he was 12 months old as it makes me realise how time doesn't just fly, it breaks the sound barrier too........

The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, and anything with ventriloquist-goes-mad plotline (what was the one with Anthony Hopkins?....) And, speaking of Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs.

The Others was scarey but really good.

I'm not a fan of the Hallowe'en or Friday 13th films, or that sort of thing, though I've seen the first Hallowe'en a couple of times.

I love Masque of the Red Death and most things with Vincent Price.

I'm reviving another old thread, that's the second in two days...sorry!

I absolutely adore horror films, I spend many a Saturday night sitting watching them until ridiculous times of the morning tongue.gif The Ring was one of the first proper horror films I watched, when I was about twelve, and it scared the actual bejeezus out of me! I haven't watched it since, but thinking back, it's a bit of a daft storyline really, and I've read the original Japanese books since, so maybe I should watch it again and see how scary it really is...I think it's lurking in the DVD drawer somewhere! Dead Silence is utterly terrifying too, unfortunately it's so absolutely gripping that I can't help but watch it every time it's on TV!
