Does anyone have any recommendations for a flute tutor book. It's for a teenager who can play the piano to Grade 6 so reading won't be an issue but now wants to learn the flute.

Any suggestions gratefully received

I think that the Learn as You Play series are quite good for people who can already read music as they don't dwell on theoretical elements for too long. I certainly worked through Learn as you Play Flute when I first got my flute.

I wouldn't usually recommend Abracadabra, but for someone who can already read music it might be worth considering. She can speed through the first section. Also there are endless well known songs for her to learn, and not too much actual theory/tuition.

I used the oboe version when I was learning (as my third instrument), and thought it was good, you do start playing proper tunes fairly quickly.

So did I. (Having played rather a lot of instruments before hand, some much more seriously than others). I got through the book in a couple of months but as Floboe says it has "proper" classical pieces once you can play an octave. Almost every lesson introduces at least one new note and has a few technical exercices. It also has a fingering chart at the back which I found useful as a reference for some time afterwards. I think you can probably supplement it with other repertoire fairly rapidly. My teacher used things which were rhythmically complex, for example. With hindsight, I think a book of technical exercices alongside would have been more useful than branching out into "real" music as I think my oboe technique lagged behind for a long time.

Many thanks all

I'll take at look at the books and see what I think.

I used the learn as you play with Alto Sax so I'll dig it out.
