had a less than helpful comment from a friend when I told her about it. 'WHAT?? You can't even play in front of me, how do you think you can do that??' :-(
I think that playing in front of friends is actually very different to playing at a forum event where you don't really know people and are unlikely to see any of them regularly.

To me, playing in front of friends would feel riskier - if you make a complete hash of something at a forum event then a) people will understand and b) if you feel really embarrased and don't feel up to facing the people you played in front of again immediately then you don't have to (the events are spaced out and this gives you time to recover in between and re-build courage). I've played at four forum events (York playday, Stalybridge adult learners and two of the Leeds 'players for pleasure' events) and I now play regularly at church, but I wouldn't want to play in front of friends unless I aready knew them as musicians (and not just as friends).
Other people may disagree, but that's how it all feels to me.
