Okay - been driving myself mad so I thought i'd ask: the grade 1 theory from last week, the last page, was it 'p' or 'pp' that we were asked to explain?

I'll be soooooooooooooo annoyed if I got it wrong by not reading the question properly!!!!! mad.gif

I didn't do the grade 1 paper, rabbit, but all I can say is try not to worry (which is easier said than done) . Most of us wonder if we have given the right answer and what we could have done differently. We also forget all the good things we did in the exam and forget about what we found easy and because of human nature concentrate on the things we felt went badly. How do you think you got on with the other questions? Good luck with your results.

Thank you for your advice. Okay I think - I have self taught the theory side of things and am a perfectionist with a captial 'P' lol. When it comes to the practical side of things if I play a wrong note I have to go back to the beginning and start the piece again - my music teacher is being driven mad by this!

A better approach is to play through slowly at first and ensure that you don't make the mistakes, unless you're sight reading in which was you need to keep going no matter what! wink.gif

I used to do exactly the same thing as you, and found that unless you identify and tackle the things that cause the mistakes, you'll just reinforce errors into your memory smile.gif

I don't know what it is, maybe I am trying to play too fast at first - I see the notes on the page but my fingers press the wrong keys on the clarinet and it's annoying because I am well aware of which key is which note blush.gif

Maybe it's nerves as well after all I am playing to a professional... still with all the money he is getting from my lessons he will be able to afford a good pair of earplugs for Christmas....

Have you not been playing very long? If so you will soon get used to nerves in front of your teacher, I used to be really nervous when I first played with my teacher, now I don't get like that at all. Also I used to always start the piece again, now I know that you just keep going whatever, funny that just sort of happens to.

I went away for a piano course last year and what came out of it from one of the teachers who is a concert pianist was for practise :-

When you have a problem with where you keep making an error - play it 3 times (must be correct each time) this way it reinforces it into your memory, if you play it wrong then that stays in your memory. I use this tactic a lot now when practising and I think it really helps.

As everyone else has suggested, really try to work through your mistakes. It is slow process to get out of the habit of starting again. Additionally if you make a mistake (and all the mistakes you say you make sound similar to myself on the piano - nerves just make you do the most bizarre things) try to just restart from that bar.

Persevere with it, it will get better!

Cool thank you both for that advice. I started playing at Easter this year and have had 14 half hour sessions with a teacher + numerous hours put in alone myself at home! I'm practising for the Grade 3 practical now and will try the repeating things 3 times tip - if I can't get my nerves under control now, what is it going to be like with an examiner!!!! ill.gif

Before receiving the result, i also worried a lot. I worried that i put in a wrong key signature in scale writing or spelt the wrong words. But the fact, i should be confident. They trapped me so much and i found that my anxious is surplus!!! So relax!!! Beleve in your eyes! God bless you! biggrin.gif In addition, G1 is just the first step of all exmas, so work hard!!!
