I'm trying to find a suitable Christmas present for my son's girlfriend, who is interested in musicals. I don't really know much about musicals myself at all, and am wary of just buying random ones online, in case they aren't in the style she likes or aren't suitable for her voice!

She is an alto, and already has the vocal scores for Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Sound of Music, Flower Drum Song and Chess.

Can anyone suggest other musicals that she might enjoy? I thought of Grease, but would the vocal range be right? Any ideas would be very welcome! biggrin.gif

What about a compilation book - something like the Musical Theatre Anthologies for Mezzos? There are several volumes to choose from. If you look at musicroom.com you can search for them and see a list of the songs in each volume.
As you are a teacher you can register - if you haven't done so already - and get 10% discount when you buy over ?20 worth - with free postage.

I second AnnC's advice - the Musical Theatre Anthology books are really great - and some of them come with a backing track CD so she can practise.

Probably a better bet than buying a score for one particular musical - this way she'll get some really great numbers from different musicals.

Thanks very much for the advice, both of you - these anthologies sound like a really good idea. I shall have a look on musicroom after lunch smile.gif

Later edit - after having looked through them, I've ordered the first volume with the backing CD. I'm sure she'll be delighted with it - and that's another Christmas present solved - yay! biggrin.gif

I was going to suggest doing one of the Music theatre workshops that are now available for shows in the west end.

Glad you found something. Sounds like a good present.

For future reference dresscircle.com is also fab for presents for musical theatre fans.

kh123, what workshops have you seen? That sounds fun! smile.gif

theatreworkshop.co.uk is the website. I was look for tickets for sister act and if you go on their official website there is a link to workshops.

I have the Andrew Lloyd Webber Anthology which is ok but it's not exclusively for single voice. I quite like it anyway ofc smile.gif

Ooh thanks, kh123. Actually I've had an experience with that company through a workshop with school. I won't say too much but not sure if I'd use them again. Maybe I was unlucky! The musical theatre workshops do look fun! smile.gif

I've PMed you as I'm not sure what the rules of the forum are. Is it a school workshop you're doing or for yourself?
