Last month I reported on a recital by Emma Johnson. Yesterday evening, in the same series 'French Impressions' at the Leeds College of Music I was privileged to hear Chloe Hanslip. wub.gif Her accompanist was Charles Owen, a new name to me , but obviously with an impressive CV, and Professor of Piano at the Guildhall.
Considering her tender age of 21, Chloe's performance was full of authority and maturity. She opened with the Ravel Sonata, one of his last works and much influenced by American Jazz. Maybe at times the portomento was a little overdone, but neverless a convincing performance. She followed this with Chaussons 'Poeme'. I wasn't familiar with this so its more difficult to comment on, but it was enjoyable nevertheless. After the interval we had the famous Franck Sonata in A - by far the work which went down best with the audience. I am very familiar with it , having played some of the piano part (but not the second movement!) . She had a lovely sense of phrasing, but for me occasionally seemed to use tenuto just a little too much. Charles from time to time I felt was rather heavy handed in the bass !
Finally a dashing performance of that lollipop , Ravels 'Tzigane'.
Overall a superbly enjoyable evening. As with Emmas recital there were some spare seats despite the small venue. I'm certainly looking forward to Pascal Roge next month (Dec 15th). If anyone is interested and there are tickets, try 0113-2243801.

Wish I'd been there wub.gif I have quite a few of her recordings and love her dexterity.. my only criticism (and really I'm in no position to critique a professional blush.gif ) would be that I'd like more depth to her tone... but that could just be the recordings.
