What sort of guitar is it? Classical or acoustic?

did you mean classical or electric? or acoustic or electric? or is there a difference between classical and acoustic, although a classical is also an acoustic

A classical guitar has nylon strings. It's the type that AB do exams for.

ps I remember about the nylon strings, as I played classical guitar for about 3 days at school when I was 6yrs old

Although a classical guitar is an 'acoustic' instrument (as in no electrics) it is not classed as an acoustic guitar. An acoustic guitar has all metal strings. An acoustic is used for different styles than classical guitar and has a different tone.

My guitar teacher says that it takes 12 years to learn to play the Classical Guitar And about 12 months to learn Acoustic. Then Bass Guitar takes about a week.

I am sure some would argue that your teacher is being a little 'cheeky' at saying that

I wish I could learn to play bass guitar as well as Steve Harris in one week (he's my favourite bass guitar player) or to make any sense of it at all in one week.

I'd love to learn bass guitar... how on earth do you practice though.. do you have backing tracks minus bass, or use a low frequency cut-off (or high pass) filter to knock out the bass on stuff you want to learn?

I've actually only jsut came back to strings! I've started clarinet and flute in the last year, my violin is dusty and not played much anymore

my understanding - which i admit is rather limited - is that at least to start with, most bass guitar playing is based on learning patterns in some arbitrary key (say, Cmaj), then transposing as appropriate to fit the chord changes. this seems like something that could be practised fairly easily without needing a back track.

Hey which kind of bass are you talking about? If you play pop music it takes 2 weeks, but if you want to play like the best bassists (Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, John Patitucci, Alain Caron, etc) it's as difficult as playing violin.
