Hello all,

I thought I'd put this in the café so that discussion needn't just surround the musical aspects of this song.

This is the new single from Roger Taylor (I'm sure you'll know by now that I'm a huge Queen fan so that's how it came to my attention). It's a song that's cutting and critical. I don't want to say bleak, but it's calling for change.

I just thought I'd ask your opinions on it from a musical, lyrical, production, any other perspective that you fancy.

YouTube link here.

Released today on digital download.

I really liked it. Lyrically he does touch on issues that are skirted around far too much, although it does come across a bit, "OMG the world is ending!" which isn't quite the case. The UK has serious issues which need sorting out, but then so does almost every other country on the planet right now.

Methinks this might get snapped up by one of the opposition political parties for election campaign time...

I still think RT looks a lot better in drag:

How people watched that video and *still* didn't click that Freddy Mercury was gay, I'll never know...

I think Roger's right that he "must be getting old"! There was never a generation yet that didn't grow world weary by his age.

There have always been lots of things wrong with the world, and probably always will be. What changes is our perspective. When we're young, we see much more of the good side of things, and as we grow older, we begin to feel that everything is broken.

I think it's a great song, and I love the music as much as the lyrics. Thanks for introducing me to it, freda-bloogs!

Apparently some people did, according to the song's Wikipedia entry:
According to Brian May in an interview about Queen's Greatest Hits, the video ruined the band in America, where many people - unlike the case in the UK - failed to see the soap-opera connection & interpreted the video as an open declaration of transvestitism and Mercury’s homosexuality. This might explain why singles failed to go above #40 in the US Billboard charts after 'Radio Ga Ga', until 'The Show Must Go On' reached No. 2. The video was initially banned by MTV in the US...

Very interesting snippet. I'd have loved to have seen the MTV censors wriggling when they were watching the vid! Although I guess they were more fearful of the pitchfork brigade descending upon the office in anger! biggrin.gif

Awesome video anyway... drag is always funny biggrin.gif I'm a Rocky Horror fan too tongue.gif

Thanks so much for sharing that, freda (tongue.gif).

I love how powerful it is... it had me mesmerised - and music of that style doesn't always do it for me if I'm honest. But I've played it a few times now, and don't think I'll be tiring of it soon.

I think the lyrics are brilliant, they're so honest - "Stupid little men". So many people wouldn't dream of saying that.

Big sign of approval from me. smile.gif
