Do you need a second study for junior RNCM? I stopped playing piano a couple on months ago. Will I have to take it up again? Also, does viola count as a second study if violin is my first?

I would say that, yes, a second study would be needed. Most students have piano as second study even if its not at a very high level. For first study pianists, of course, it would some other instrument. I know of some who've started an instrument as a second study after joining. Not sure if viola and violin would work. I would suggest that you contact them about this. They're very friendly! How old are you, and are you considering applying? There's also an open day in February in case that's of interest. Let me know if there are any other questions and I'll be happy to answer if I can. It's my daughter's second year at Junior RNCM.

I have read all the brochures recently for all the other Junior Departments (but not RNCM so obviously this is just a general answer and not specific to your question) and it says you don't need a second study which is why it is not included in the course fees. They say however that many do have a second study and in any case they do try to encourage everyone to learn the piano - not necessarily there. And if you are a pianist to do something secondary to it such as singing.

At Birmingham while most students do have a second study there is no requirement to. We currently have two second studies. It is pretty flexible.
Ring them up.

My daughter started at Junior RNCM this year. As far as I am aware you do need a second study. At one time it had to be Piano but from what I can gather it doesn't have to be anymore (only what I've heard from other parents).

I'm pretty sure the fee structure does include a second study. You could always ring or email the JD and ask them they are very good and will happily advise.

They are very flexible too in our experience.

I was at Juniors for 4 years from 2003-2007. My brother joined this year at the age of 16 without a second study and actually gets a reduction on his fees, so by no means is it compulsory. Junior RNCM is a really flexible programme: the principal is extremely accommodating when it comes to personal interests etc so I wouldn't worry. come down to the Open day, it's always really informative smile.gif
