Hi all. Has anyone had results from this exam session? I am really, really pleased as I have just had my first ever adult pupil that I have taught from a 'total beginner' take grade 1 and - even though she felt the exam went badly, she got a merit!

Congratulations, gards.

I've had my TG results, which were mainly as expected. But the real surprise was my Grade 8, who got a merit.

This is the same pupil who failed Grade 7 (AB) catastrophically just 18 months ago, mainly because of severe exam nerves. She switched boards and passed Grade 7 with TG a year ago, and has really come on since. I was especially pleased that one of the comments for her sight reading was 'Confident playing'. I would never have predicted that a year ago.

Congratulations Gards and Andante in C.
One my pupils took an exam on another instrument ( = with another teacher), and got his results in not much more than a week. (actually he's pretty pleased - 141 for gr3 cornet at 8 years old).
Mine are tomorrow so its a bit early to be looking for results...

One of my adults who I was quite nervous for, received his Grade 6 Oboe result yesterday - he passed with 68 (TG), which was better than we'd hoped for!
My ABRSM candidates took their exams on Friday, but they're all pretty safe candidates, so all being well it'll be good news in a couple of weeks. Also have one grade 5 theory result to wait for, again, should be pretty safe!

I'm very disappointed - I've just had the results for my grade 2 pupil, and I feel they are a little low for the pieces....I'll see what the mark sheet says, but I really felt that the pieces were better than the mark they got - unless something went really, really wrong in the exam, which I don't think it did.....

Yes, I have had similar experience (and I'm still waiting for the mark sheet). Luckily I had 2 different candidates play the same piece so I can compare - one got 20, the other got 25.
The candidate who got 20 suffers terribly from performance nerves but... I feel they both played the piece superbly (in my humble opinion) so am thinking that the examiner didn't agree with my interpretation (which I think a little harsh for a grade 2 piece)... candidate 2 still got a distinction but I'm curiously waiting to read the sheet as you are...!

Some impressive results this time!
I haven't had anything quite as impressive - but have just heard that my young grade 1 girl, whom _ on this site _ 6 weeks ago I aired my concerns about failing (illness and grammar test had halted all progress for several weeks) and asked for opinions on deferring/cancelling exam, PASSED WITH 117!
I'm worried that she will be a bit disappointed, as she is very clever and good at everything she does, but I am very pleased as 6 weeks ago I feared a fail was on the cards!!!

Daughter just got her grade 6 cello result and is very disappointed, having passed with 115. While this is a solid pass, her average mark for previous cello exams is 136! She thought she'd done badly in the supporting tests, but in fact it is the marks for the pieces that have let her down (21,23,22). We don't have the comments sheet as yet. No doubt it will make for interesting reading. Whereas it is tempting to think the relatively low marks might reflect the difference in marking criteria between Grade 5 and 6, she has passed Grade 6 on two other instruments with distinction, and these marks for her pieces are significantly worse than any she has previously been awarded on any instrument or singing, so it's all a bit puzzling at the moment. Her accompanist thought the pieces went well, and she certainly played them beautifully in the warm up room. Now she is disheartened and upset, and saying she doesn't want to see her cello teacher (who doesn't know the result yet) ever again...........

Just got my two practical results - two merits.
A week and a day - thanks AB - this does seem to be an improvement.
I have to say that as others have commented, the marks for the pieces seem on the low side, especially for one candidate. However I have yet to see the marks sheets. But the marks for the pieces are very 'average' and I'd not have expected these two - quite different - candidates to be within one mark of each other overall.

Hlaka, my daughter was like that last session. She got 137 for Gr 5 and 112 for GR 6. She wanted to give . She thought it was atrocious and didn't want to tell her teacher (she had 3 distinctions for Gr 3, 4 and 5). She has got over it now and is happy playing again. It really gave her a knock back. She wouldn't even read her mark sheet at the time.
Hope your daughter recovers soon!

Well, I've had the mark sheets and I have to say the marks were a little low when compared with the comments. I'm especially sorry for the Grade 5, who was taking her last exam in this country before returning to Australia to live, as 118 was a very frustrating mark to get!

Congratulations I'm sure you and your pupils have worked very hard.
Probably unitl a few months ago I was of the opinion that results were all down to the pupils hard work and determination. At the higher grades it's as much due to the teacher. Guidance is absolutly vital beyond Grade 5 and probably essential before if you can get it.

Emsoboes last Sax result was down largely to her teacher but also to her Piano teacher. Her young teacher is a Jazz specialist and had her playing one of the pieces in a style leaning towards Jazz. Her Piano teacher spotted and sorted it. It wasn't major, had she not had all the correct technique in place couldn't have been resolved so easily, but shows how much a good accompanist can help too.

very pleased with my results this term, only had 3 entered:
Grade 1 Singing 136
Grade 5 Singing 135
Grade 2 Piano 124
Particularly pleased with the piano as she broke her finger several weeks before and had only been able to play about 10 days before the exam, then she turned up on the day and she was coming down with flu!! We had considered cancelling but she thought she would give it a go...she will be VERY pleased we did

Grade 1 -clarinet- merit 126
Grade 5 clarinet- merit 124
I am really pleased- the Grade 1 is a little 7 year old who lost a a bottom front tooth before the exam (and the other tooth was wobbly). She got neary full marks in her aural!
The Grade 5 only did her Gr 4 2 terms ago and she wasn't going to do her Gr 5 until next term as she was going to do a piano exam. We brought the exam forward by a term as she wasn't ready for the piano exam- so I'm really pleased with her too.
Results came in under 2 weeks- very impressed ABRSM.

Results came in quicker than I expected - 10 days, nice.
Not so nice: only entered 1 student, my first exam entry ever, and she's come out with 100!
I knew she wouldn't do amazing: she's come from another teacher, it's been a long time since she last did an exam and we've been working on lots of technique but often it has been quite slow going. She was keen to do the exam (so was Mum - who wanted her to do it in summer but I refused to enter her because she just wasn't prepared).
She practices hard but she's a memoriser rather than a reader, hence the slow going - we have to un-learn a lot of practiced in mistakes, although this is getting better. Obviously I am teaching her to look and listen more, I'm not a teacher who takes shortcuts by sweeping things under the rug. That said, the exam needed doing and she certainly wasn't underprepared. Nervous maybe but she knew everything to a good standard. She says the exam went well, and I assured her Mum she would get a good pass (i was expecting 110-120).
How do I now explain a result like this? Maybe she just played badly on the day, maybe the examiner was difficult to please. I'm disappointed for her but more worried what her Mum will say!!
