Hi guys!

Does some of you know how long it usually takes to notice any improvements in your voice when your going to a vocal coach?

From what I remember of my first lesson, I saw improvement straight away. Obviously I wasn't spectacular all of a sudden, but the basic techniques, breathing etc helped me straight away.

lucky is right - you should notice improvement on certain aspects straightaway.

However, it can take considerably longer until these things become reliable/second nature. The problem that many students have is that it works during the lesson, under supervision by their teacher, but they lose it again when they go home and practise alone and nobody is there to correct them.

This is nothing to worry about at the start, although every good teacher will of course work on you getting independent. It is only the slightly shady ones who'll try to keep you small and dependent, so they can squeeze as much money out of you as possible.

Think of it like sports: Your coach will show you how to do certain movements, and what training is required to improve. It will take considerably longer though until you can run the 100m under 10 sec - and some might never get there, but they will still be better runners than average Joe Public.

It's the same with singing. Tiny improvements - straightaway, and these things will gradually build up and already make you sound much better after a few weeks/months. The bigger picture and full command of your voice - usually years ...

When i say practise i think of what my teacher will say that i need to do at home..I know this is different from person to person. But whats like the most common thing to work on. And how much:)?

That's really impossible to say and depends indeed on your teacher - and you. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses, and you would need a clairvoyant to tell you

You'll find out, don't panic ...

As for how much:

Most singing teachers I know are much happier with little chunks of practice every day (let's say 15 min here, 15 min there) than with one big 2 hour practice-session. It's not just less productive, it is also more likely to strain your voice at the start.

Im a little nervous for the first lesson. But oh well. Its worth it:D!

Don't be nervous! I definitely made improvements in the first lesson and had loads to work on myself after! And I definitely learn something every lesson, although I totally agree with what Rosfrog says about it taking much longer for it to become reliable. (This is what I'm trying to work on now!)

As for practicing, I don't know what teachers think but I try to do what Mezzo says and do a bit every day and try to avoid leaving big gaps between practices unless unavoidable (like when I spent a week in London with my students at a Youth Hostel!) then try to fit a longer one in at the weekend maybe.

Hmm, my mom is gonna call her tomorrow, so i guess it will be in the very near future. Maybe next week:)

I wonder how she will react when i sing for her the first time:S Thats whats scary!

It is scary! I was almost shaking with nerves but teachers are experienced in making you feel comfortable so I'm sure you'll be fine. They're going to be looking for ways to improve your voice and that's what you're after. It's not like a performance where you're hoping to get it right all the time. You'll enjoy it once you get going! Don't forget to report back!

Is it smart to have a song to sing when i come to my teacher? A song i sound ok with? or is it something i just should take right at the spot?
