Full Version: Cheap Trombones...

I'm looking for a (very) cheap trombone that I can play in our college jazz band and big band, and possibly chamber orchestra too (NB - I play to about G5 standard, I just don't have a trombone anymore as I had to return it to school when I left sad.gif). Does anyone have any recommendations of a suitable instrument - I mean, £200 is the maximum I can spend. I'm not really looking for anything fancy, just something that will get played once or twice a week.

I've done a bit of research, and the Packer ones have a semi-decent review, and for £130 I must say I'm quite tempted. Has anyone played one of these?

Thanks smile.gif

Do you have a GOOD music shop - perhaps even a specific wind/brass shop near you? If so you may well find that they have second hand instruments that they have taken in part exchange available - you might get a better instrument for your money if you buy second hand.

Are you anywhere near Myatts in Hitchin, Herts ?

I have a Dawsons *makes a face*. I don't go in there anymore seeing as they took 4 months to get some Christmas music in stock, and then had the cheek to ring me up mid-January to ask if I still wanted it...

I agree with the second hand option, I picked up a second hand Yamaha for under £200 and that's great smile.gif I do have a friend with a Stagg which is around a similar price and I have to admit it's not 'too' bad, he uses it when playing in a cramped environment when there's a chance of his Edwards getting dinged smile.gif

Yes, I've got one of these cheapies - it works fine, though as with any cheap trombone, I'm not sure how the slide will fare over time. I've a pupil who's bought Packer's Rath model, and the slide and sound is much superior.

Ah merci. I think I may be veering towards ordering one of these...

Christmas is coming.... do you have friendly parents and/or other relatives who could chip in?

My parents don't want me to get one sad.gif According to them it wouldn't get played. I did point out that I would be using it in 2+ ensembles per week but I don't think this registered...
