Hi

What have people picked to play for the Grade 5 flute exam? I can't seem to find anything I like out of the ones Ive been given, and would just like some other opinions!

Heya

I just did my Grade 5 this session and I played

A Anitra's Dance (liked it al;ready so that was a given when I saw the list)

B Koechlin (I forget the numbers (5 and 12 I think)but there are two short pieces to play instead of one) - this is a great suit overall and have played two others for previous exams

C - Ringing in the changes - horrendous fingering (which I slipped on more than one occasion in the exam) but fun to play none the less.
Misterioso
I just did my Grade 5 too. I played:-

A3: Largo & Allegro (Handel)

B5: Whistling Song from Caribbean Suite (Bryan Kelly)

C3: Study in C (Kohler)

I originally intended to play Anitra's Dance for List A too, but felt there was more in it that could potentially go wrong in an exam.

Ukjason - have you got your results yet?

I ummed and ahhed about Whistling Song but Koechlin always wins with me lol

I have had my results (and certificate now to) yes, happily passed smile.gif How about yourself Misterioso?

Mine did the Handel, Berkeley Prelude (love this piece in its original form also!), and the Kohler.

I accompanied the Stanley Allegro Andante and the first movement of the Sonatine by Claude Arrieu. As a pianist, I then went out and bought the score to the Arrieu, as well as a recording of the complete work. Not being allowed to remain for the unaccompanied piece, I'm afraid I cannot enlighten you as to the candidate's choice for the study.

The Sonatine is lovely, I'm working on it now as a pure interst piece.

TG have it on their Grade 6 list, where I feel it is a little more comfortable. Technically it can be played by a Grade 5 candidate, but its length and musical challenges lend themselves more to Grade 6.

I can busk quite a bit of the accompaniment, and love the ending! biggrin.gif

I was fascinated to find that Claude Arrieu was a friend of Messiaen and studied composition in the same class at the Paris Conservatoire, taught by Paul Dukas (of Sorceror's Apprentice fame).

Interesting it's a greade higher on TG syllabus.

I love the sound but felt it was one I'd mess up too easily in an exam. I've been playing with it for ages now and it's still hard to get under my fingers. Persevering however as it is def developing into a favourite piece.

I agree wholeheartedly with andante_in_c regarding the Arrieu - the notes alone are not enough for this stunning piece.

Dunno about everyone else but the thought of being stuck with the AB flute syllabus until 2013 is a fact I find not remotely pleasing!

Well done, ukjason. Yes - I passed too - and really surprised myself with a merit. Very happy! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
