Would definitely say Brighouse. Black Dyke sound a bit, I don't know how to say it, harsh is the only word I can use, for my taste. Brighouse may have the edge because of the recording of The Floral Dance. Great Soprano cornet part wub.gif

Blimey Juniper you are going back a long way with B&R playing the Floral Dance a lot of water under the bridge since then, rumours lately of a lot of dissent in the band, if I remember correctly the late Brian Evans was the sop player on that recording.

At the risk of putting a fly in the ointment, the sound of a Brass Band doesn't do anything for me. I'm not really sure why as, being a brass player, you'd think it would tick all the boxes! I think the Sop doubling the top an octave up grates me. wacko.gif
Don't get me wrong, there are some phenomenal players around and I have utmost respect for them.
Also, I don't think music should be a competition.
Just my opinion!! wink.gif

Know what you mean about dissent in brass bands, seen many a good punch up over the years, and music is suppose to make you full of love for your fellow bandsmen/women, I myself threatened to put my euph over a cornet players head if he did not stop making comments about the euph section, great days

rofl.gif Brilliant. I remember a massed band event where one Euph player threatened to break anothers fingers if he got any more notes wrong laugh.gif Coincidently I've just been asked if I would help out a band for a contest in March. I think this thread has reminded why this may not be a great idea tongue.gif

Don't worry about being nosy. I don't play in brass bands anymore as the ska band keeps me way too busy. Occasionally help out some local ones (sop cornets are a bit of a rarity down here biggrin.gif ) I was tempted by the contest but I have to be honest with myself, with the band, piano grade possibly and OU study I'm not going to have the time. That's always my trouble, taking on too much laugh.gif
