Hi to one and all
Can anyone advise me on how to start vibrato. When I try to vibrato the whole violin shakes, unless I gently place the scroll against the wall. I'm taking my grade 4 in June hopefully, but would like to fairly competent for when i'm ready for grade 5.

I assume you have a teacher? It's best to ask them, as demonstrations will teach you more than reading anyone's text here.
Remember though, you don't need vibrato for grade 4, and you don't want to risk trying it in the exam in case it goes wrong.
Maybe it's best to wait until after the exam?

I'm only just starting to get the hang of it- the whole violin always used to shake at first- very annoying! Here's what my teacher told me:
Start by just sliding your finger up and down the finger board, and then press your finger down and try to move it while it's still pressed down. Don't worry- you get used to it after a while!

Hope this helps.
Good luck with Grade 4!

Well, I was trying to learn vibrato 1 year ago, was really struggling through it, i was indeed shaking the violin at first! Then, my teacher uses the method thought in All For Strings Book2, it quite helped me. Though it is not perfect at the moment. Hope that helps!
