Full Version: Piano Footstool For Child

Just wondering whether any parents have found a reasonably priced footstool for a small child playing piano?
My seven year old needs one and we are currently using a couple of large catalogues!

It would be nice to have smething more visually pleasing, (and doesn't shed pages over the floor!) but I did a web search and anything specifically for this purpose is very expensive, and it is difficult to find anything else the correct height.

Thanks in anticipation of any suggestions

What about a guitarist's footstool? (You might need two - I'm not sure how wide they are)

I'm not a pianist, and my daughter's big enough that she doesn't need one. So, I'm not sure just what's required, but I see that Ikea sell a variety of footstools, one of which might suit.

I have one which I bought in Boots a couple of years ago - price about £10. It's plastic, so not particularly good looking, but it does the job and is practical. I can post dimensions if it helps. I would actually like a lower one too - this one is fine with most under 8s but there is an interim period when I end up using a couple of phone books.

(ed - I forgot to say it folds almost flat)

I'm afraid I'm a teacher straying into the parents forum! I've been looking for a stool for ages for my younger pupils - a number of local small household shops have plastic stools outside, alongside buckets and other household items, I found various different heights but they are always too high for what is needed - it probably only needs to be about 6-8 inches. These are cheap and just the kind of thing which would work well. One of the primary schools I go to has one just at the height I would like so I know someone makes them! In the meantime, I'm still looking around.

The closest I've found online is this but at 240mm high (10") then it's too high:

OK, so I'm obsessed by IKEA. Not pretty, but cheap, what about this, which claims to be 13cm high?

Or what about this at just over 7 inches? Not great for dirty feet, though. There are hassocks here too.

(You can tell I'm having a good day at work today..!)

The 13 cm one is probably just about right as the next directory and an argos catalogue come to just below that!
Thanks for all the replies - looks like a trip to Ikea is in order!

My daughter used to stand at the piano until she was tall enough to sit comfortably! A possible alternative would be to use your old bathroom step-up stool (if you've kept it!). A friend of mine decorated hers with some pretty fabric and it lasted her three children at the piano.

One of my pupils used to stand at the piano as well - she's almost big enough now not to need a footstool and I usually put a pillow on the floor over the pedals which works quite well for her. My youngest pupil is nearly 6 and also quite likes standing but I do need find something sturdy to use as a footstool for him.

My mother seems to pick them up in charity shops - she found me one initially that was OK but it had sharp corners and so when it was knocked over it bashed the front of the piano blink.gif , then she found a lovely one with curvy corners that does the job beautifully.

So my advice is: find someone who likes hanging around second-hand places, and ask them to keep a look out... tongue.gif

I like this idea - I'll try to investigate some local shops if/when I get some spare time ...

I found a cheap plastic stool last week which is the right height but unfortunately it is not heavy enough so my 6 year old who was rather tired and wriggly this week just tipped it over all the time. So yes - it needs to be sturdy enough that a child can't easily move it, kick it, tip it over etc.

Hassocks! No why didn't I think of that? I wonder if the church would miss one....! muahaha.gif
