I think I noticed that Michael Nyman's The Piano was on the Dip LCM in piano syllabus. Does anyone out there in Diploma land know if it would be an acceptable piece for an ATCL? I know you would have to ask special permission to play something not on the syllabus, but was just wondering if anyone had heard of it being played before?

Thanks

That surprises me. I would not have thought it was sufficiently demanding to be on the Diploma Syllabus (even taking into account the high standard of performance that will be expected). I would have expected to see it on the Grade 7 syllabus or thereabouts.

But there are many such anomalies.

In any case - definitely worth checking its suitability with the examining board to be sure that it is acceptable to them at that level.

Me too!
But assume it would have to be played better than what I hear coming out of the school practice rooms at lunchtime! laugh.gif

The only way you can check its suitability if it is not on the extended piano list is to submit a full programme with the piece in and see what happens. Trinity does not offer assessments of single pieces - though a programme can be turned down because one piece is deemed too low in standard. Once a programme is accepted, it is valid for, errr, can't remember how long, but I think a couple of years....My original LTCL proposal was turned down after a nicked a piece from a rival board's list, but I also then got guidance on other possible areas in which my programme was a bit dodgy so was able to address that too.

I submitted an ATCL programme and got it approved last year. It only contained 1 work on their list. It's valid for 5 years smile.gif

well I need to pass my Grade 8 first before I start seriously thinking about a piano diploma!!

I have a few pieces that I am dying to learn to play - for instance, Ravel's Pavane and the aforementioned The Piano among others, and I was wondering if a good way of tackling those pieces might be to think of working towards a diploma - there are a couple of these pieces on the ACTL and / or LCM syllabus - hence my original question. Plus I have found a teacher who is just amazing and she might just help me!

Anyway, I can dream ..... in reality it is some way off.

Now, back to my Grade 8 scales!!!

If there are pieces that you are dying to play, and they are within your present capabilities, or just beyond them, then just learn them! There is no need to be working towards a Diploma or any other exam.
