Full Version: That Infernal String Question

Misterioso
Just now I'm playing on Corelli Crystal strings (violin). I find them quite bright and loud. Possibly they have not been properly played in yet (they have only been on the instrument for a week or two) but I am still after a more mellow kind of tone. I have tried, in recent years, Helicores, Dominants (yuk!) and Obligatos - and although I often ask for strings for Christmas, it does start to get expensive! So rather than more trial and error, what do other people think of Eudoxa?

Eudoxa are nice on some instruments - but you'll get a very different bow response to your crystals. They might sound muddy on an instrument that did well with helicore, though.

If you want similar bowing, with a warmer sound - try Zyex, or perhaps dominant lights (a very different beast to dominant medium - much richer and softer).
TRACY
Eudoxas are lovely and my daughter uses them, but would only use them on better quality instruments, and for experienced players, as obviously you cannot use fine tuners with them and tuning can be an issue on pegs alone for some these days it appears, and they will need to be tuned more often. Alternative synthetic strings with a warm tone are tonica and zyex as mentioned can work well. You've used obligatos, which are probably the closest synthetic match to Eudoxa. If you do use Eudoxas, maybe a mix of Eudoxa G and D and synthetic A and E may work well for you, my daughter does this sometimes, although not sure what you mean by mellow - Eudoxas give a rich warm tone, expecially lower strings, but not sure I would describe them as mellow. Tonicas could be the answer and not too pricey to give a try, unlike Eudoxa!
Misterioso
Thanks - that helps a lot. It would seem that if obligatos are indeed the nearest synthetic match to eudoxa, then eudoxa strings are probably not what I am looking for. I think by "mellow" I mean warm! But at the same time, I need a good performance string for concerts in the coming weeks, so I think I will stick with the Corelli Crystals just now and see if they improve with a bit more playing in. smile.gif
