Hi ,
Anyone is going to take the Gd 8 violin Exam next year? Which exam pieces do you feel good at? which do you prefer for each Section?
Does anyone play the First Rhapsody by Bela Bartok? For me, it is a really hard piece, i'm facing problem with it.

I guess this is a forum for the students to discuss these pieces between themselves. As i have recorded the cds for you i can say that there are some very nice pieces in the syllabus. The Bartok has some tricky bits i guess, but to be fair every piece has its own problems and difficulties, whether it is right or left hand related, style, sound etc etc. I do have my favourite pieces. I can say that one of the pieces i really loved was the Kabalevsky Improvisation. It is a fantastic piece of music, very dramatic. Also the Britten and Milhaud in list C i enjoyed very much. What about Brahms Scherzo, Wieniawski Mazurka, Kreisler Liebesfreud, Hubay and Ten Have in list B and Bach, Corelli and Handel sonatas in list A?. There is such a choice that i would get lost.
Best of luck to all of you and hope you make the right choices.

I'm kinda confused about the grade 8 exam. My teacher said there's no book and just gave me photocopies of 4 pieces: the Bartok Rhapsody, Brahms' Scherzo, Vivaldi's Spring and an unnamed Mozart. Where's the list?
I'm playing the Bartok right now, and it's my favourite piece so far! [also playing Vivaldi and just started Brahms, which sounds darn weird] The last page full of chords is really crazy... but sounds so good when my teacher plays it! Probably gonna choose this piece, but I have no idea what section it's in...?

You should find the syllabus on the main site under exams.
You say you are working from photocopies at the moment... if you take the exam you will have to have the books with you, the copies will not be acceptable.

Sharl,
for info:
The Mozart is the Rondeau from Concerto No. 3, and is in list A; the Brahms Scherzo is in list B; and the Bartok is from list C.
Have a look at the lists though as there may be something else you might prefer that your teacher hasn't shown you.
Whatever you decide to play, as sbhoa said, you will have to buy all the music seperately. Photocopies are not allowed to be used in the exam room because of copyright etc.

ahh yeah, the photocopy problem... but it's such a bother to hunt all the books containing those songs down! I wonder if I should memorize them?

haha, well I checked out the syllabus but don't know any of the songs - or maybe I do know them but can't link them to their names. The Skinner and Wieniawski sound kinda interesting though [by their names]
