As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Discovering Music today takes us through Chopin's 24 Preludes.

Stephen Johnson will discuss them with Llyr Williams and, for those who are choosing the C# minor Op.45 prelude from the AB Grade 8 Piano List C, Benjamin Frith will be helping to take us through that piece too. piano.gif

I'm fed up of Chopin preludes. We've had two full sets on TV in the last month or so

Whilst I fear we shall suffer a surfeit of Chopinalia this year, at least 'Discovering Music' is more of an illustrated talk/lecture than a recital per se. I have never heard a similar treatment of Scriabin's preludes though or for that matter those of Shostakovich, which being more of a set than Scriabin's, with the additional cohension brought about by the cycle of fifths, might be a better bet.

I didn't listen to it live as I thought I would hear it on the computer under the 'listen again' system. However, I now find that this particular programme is not, and will not be, available on listen again - so I've missed it!

One side effect of this programme was that I marked down 2 further preludes to learn smile.gif (I was reading through the scores in my book while they were playing the pieces... some were almost impossible to follow! ohmy.gif)

From a pedagogical point of view, did you notice how Chopin used the cycle of fifths in his transition from one prelude to the next?

Shostakovich, both with his 24 preludes and his preludes and fugues, published them in the order of the cycle of fifths, major - relative minor pairs i.e. C maj, Amin, G maj, E min .... and so on.
