"Must we understand what goes on inside educational institutions to understand the relationship between education and society?"
What a contrived question. Not the sort of thing anyone would be spending much time on if some deranged examiner had not thought of it.
Anyway, I am going to SLEEP when I log off.
Not sure how helpful that was MadTom.
I'm not entirely sure you are right on this one either.

I'm talking about Marx, Weber and Durkheim. I wish sociology had been on my curriculum.

Loads of my fellow students have done A level sociology and found this really easy but I found all the lectures just went over my head. Never mind - onwards and upwards!

Oh gosh, good luck Celeste!

Ok.... (and feel free to ignore this if you have already done it.... )...I can't help with the sociology and Marx etc and I'm not entirely sure this will help but I'm going to try.
This is something I remember being told on my course. (I'm paraphrasing):
We have to remember that many people have been failed by the education system so are either distrustful and/or unsupportive of it. They may believe that it's no good for their children either. These children then come into education with all this kind of "bagagge" and it's hard for them to break out of the mould, believe they can do well etc. So I guess that what went on in the educational institute the parents attended did indeed shape their future (and that of their kids) and their views of the value of education.
I guess what I'm saying is that we are a product of our experiences (including our schooling) and that we in turn use our experiences to inform our views, values and opinions about the world. We then also use these views, values and opinions in our interactions with others and in raising our children - so we can influence others quite considerably. As within Western society (at least) our children spend 18 years within the education system it must have quite a pivotal role in this. A positive time in educational institutions can breed more positivity within those individuals and their offspring. However, it will take a lot to erase people's distrust formed by negative experiences.
I have no idea if this helps....
