...a quick heads up for this : it's on 12th-14th November 2010. As long as the RNCM Saxophone day/weekend doesn't clash, I'm hoping to come along... smile.gif

Have I spelt 'sackbut(t)' wrongly?...
Maizie
Doubt it. Likely it sometimes it has one t, sometimes two. Sometimes it has a g in place of the ck (As in "His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts").
Spelling was not consistent in the time of early music, meaning you can never ever get it wrong smile.gif
anacrusis
laugh.gif it does conjure up an image of a king with droopy trousers...

I probably won't be able to come down this time: last year was the first time in a long time that it hadn't overlapped with a family birthday, and this time we're back to it being too much of a clash, given that a trip down means two or three days of absenteeism sad.gif. *hankers after beautiful peashooter she saw last time*

Think I would like to go this year... wanted to go last time but double booked myself!Must write on calendar now!!! smile.gif

Glad to be back on the forum again.......been off for so long...forgot my username:-) what a muppet!
barry-clari
Thread resurrection time! biggrin.gif

Think I might be able to do something with this event this year biggrin.gif Anyone else planning to go? smile.gif
andante_in_c
I need to go, as my post-Grade 8 recorder pupil needs to look at instruments. wub.gif However, as last year, it clashes with a local music festival on the Friday/Sunday, and with LRO and SRP on the Saturday. Something will have to give...
CJB
If I go this year it will have to be on the Friday as I'm rehearsing all weekend in Birmingham. Not sure I'll go though as I there is nothing specific I'm after and until I have a source of income again I don't want to frustrate myself by putting temptations in front of me.
Maizie

Haha, my thoughts exactly. If I go, it's unlikely I'll come away with nothing...the thing is, there's nothing I actually need and probably better off not spending the money. Might see how money is nearer the time biggrin.gif
barry-clari
If I'm able to find time, it'll be the Friday or the Saturday...definitely can't do Sunday...
Maizie
Anybody more definite about going (now it is only four weeks away)?

Not that I'm definitely going. I'm considering booking the Friday off work - just in case - even though there is still nothing I need. All the festival is is temptation (compounded by my teacher going on about low pitch; and then katyjay playing a low pitch in my hearing). But I could just have a day off an do nothing but relax at home if I decide not to go...just pondering biggrin.gif
katyjay
Well...I might just find myself with an excuse to wander over there....

Maybe look at some sheet music or something....
andante_in_c
I'm going on the Saturday afternoon (having to miss SRP to do so sad.gif).
jod
Greenwich is fairly easy to get to... and recorders too...
jo.clarinet
I'll be there on the Sunday, as usual smile.gif
jod
I think hubby's greatest fear about me attending an event like this is strange early woodwind packages arriving home with me along with a massive credit card bill.

Now much as I would like a couple of crumhorns a new recorder or two, a baroque oboe...

NOT THIS TIME. His car needed a few more repair than expected, and I need to replace mine.

Still a girl can dream.
barry-clari
Have decided to go on the Friday...anyone else going then? smile.gif
CJB
Would love to but can neither afford it or afford to put temptation so much in front of me. Hope you have fun.
Maizie
I'm pretty much in the same position.

I know if I go I'll come home with a 415 treble smile.gif And with the current month of lots of vets bills and my brother's 40th, I probably shouldn't be thinking about it sad.gif
Maizie
My super-de-dooper URGENT work for Friday has just been pushed back to next Friday...I do not need to take the day off, I do not need to take the day off, I do not need to take the day off...

You're tempted, aren't you! laugh.gif

I doubt I'll buy anything, but it's worth going just to try interesting instruments! biggrin.gif And Greenwich is very close to Clari Towers...

I admire your self restraint. It is an expensive journey from here and I know I wouldn't resist temptation.
Maizie
No.
Not at all.
Not one little bit.

Will speak to Mr Maizie tonight though ("I'm just going to meet with friends; I need to use up some holiday anyway; I won't buy anything [except maybe some music, which is not expensive {unless you buy an awful lot}]" etc)

Three years ago, Misterjay let me go to Greenwich with Supervision....and I saw a bass recorder I fell in love with and subsequently bought....

Two years ago, Misterjay let me go to Greenwich with Supervision...and I saw a great bass recorder I fell in love with and subsequently bought.

Last year, Misterjay let me go to Greenwich with Supervision...and I saw a treble recorder that somehow ended up coming home with me....

This year, Misterjay has decided to come with me and Supervise me himself....

So we'll be there on Sunday afternoon (and I'll have someone with me to provide the credit card and carry home the trophies.... biggrin.gif )

Last year was the 1st time I went without friends and the only time I came away with just the thing I went for!

I definitely need to visit with you in tow! I don't have the bravery to pick things up if I know it's very unlikely I'll be buying. I know that sort of thing is what the exhibition is about, but I've always gone round looking at 'what I'm looking for' and not being brave enough to waste anybody's time just trying stuff out...

I try hard not to pick up too many things I can't afford just in case I fall in love. Though to be honest my main purchase last year was a direct result of picking up a descant recorder that was several times my upper limit of the previous years trip!

OK : will PM you tomorrow, Maizie smile.gif
Maizie
Am still deciding. Will have to decide this afternoon, really, if I'm to book the day off work smile.gif

But am now thinking it might be ideal for buying some music. I actually own very little of the G7 syllabus, so at my lesson on Thursday I could ask for some 'good buys' from my teacher, and maybe find them on Friday. And not buy any instruments but still have a lovely day out surrounded by lovely musicality smile.gif

I'm sooooo rubbish, how hard can it be to decide whether to even go or not!!!!
Maizie
Right, I've caved! Day off booked! I'm going to Greenwich! smile.gif

Will reply to your PM b-c biggrin.gif

Have a really good time ! I, of course, am not going - but oh how I wish I were. The Early Music Shop are kind enough to send me the details every year but the nearest I get is cutting out the pictures from their catalogue and pinning them up at school!

Not only that - but I went to school in Greenwich, Founders Day was in St Alfege's and I walked my dogs in Greenwhich Park.

So to all who are going - ENJOY YOURSELVES !!
Maizie
I am back.

With a big pile of music.

And a Mollenhauer pearwood treble at A=415 blush.gif

Not a big surprise really. The real surprise was my husband picking me up from the railway station and confessing to having bought a camera before I had to confess to buying a(nother) recorder - turns out we spent about the same amount of money today!!

Barry was an absolute star and took me in hand with regards to trying things out and not being worried about being the only person at a stand and having to potentially talk to someone. Without then buying anything.

So today I have played:
Crumhorns
A cornemuse (a straight crumhorn, basically)
Possibly a Rauschpfeife (which looks to be the same as a cornemuse)
A cornetto
Gemshorns, including a stunning one which (now I look up the price) must have been a sub-bass wub.gif
A serpent
A small clarinet (labelled as a 'diatonic clarinet')
A chalmeaux
Bladder pipes
A baroque flute in a walking stick (yes, really! I only sort of half got a note out of it as I've never played flute)
A plucked psaltery
A knee harp (with only four strings!)
Clavichords
A spinet
Harpsichords

Oh, and lots of recorders, garklein to great bass (no contras there today)
barry-clari
No problem, Maizie : it's been a fun day, and it was good to catch up with you. smile.gif

I played all that Maizie did, with the addition of several Baroque flutes (that F# fingering makes no sense laugh.gif ), but was very good and I restricted my purchases to the entrance fee, a bottle of cola and a piece of cake!

That recorder of yours is really nice, Maizie, hope you enjoy playing it! smile.gif

And those of you going tomorrow and Sunday, have fun : there's loads of goodies there to try biggrin.gif
wendywoo
Sorry I didn't see either of you there.
Erm, about buying instruments. Well...... I fell under the spell of a soprano shawm, oops clarinet.gif
I also went to the Quartet New Generation concert - brilliant! I've never seen anyone play the body of a recorder like a trumpet before blink.gif , but it's very effective.
I get home at 10pm exhausted but very happy.
