NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

the frog on my £450 bow has CRACKED!!!! ph34r.gif ohmy.gif argh.gif

I was putting the bow away after orchestra tonight, in the case, it's always been a little 'tight' to get the frog past the plastic hook and there was a need to press slightly the bow in past the hook, but not too hard! anyway I put it back as I always have done (in past 3 months since I bought it) and the frog just cracked in half like it was butter!!! ohmy.gif

I am not happy as this is an expensive bow from a reputable maker and it's 3 months old and I did not put too much force on it at all, it shouldn't crack that easily! mad.gif

as tomorrow my violin gets dropped off to have its pegs fitted, I will tell luthier I want the maker to replace the frog free of charge!
If that fails I will not buy their bows in future and if it's expensive to get a new decent frog put on then I might have to claim it on the insurance (bow is insured).

we'll see..... dry.gif

Oh no, that's terrible Jojo sad.gif hope you can get it sorted, I'd kick up a fuss if I were you, that shouldn't be happening so early on after buying! mad.gif

Hope you get it sorted, Jo. smile.gif

This sounds as if there has been a flaw in the frog so they should replace it. Even cheap bows would generally last longer.I know we'd have no trouble with our dealer so hopefully yours will be just as helpful. Bear in mind you may only be claim on your insurance for accidental damage so they may not pay up in this instance.

Yes, it's a decent maker, and known for their hardiness so it'll be a one-off flaw, or damage done in the journey between them and you, so I can't see there should be any problems getting it changed. I'd go for a replacement rather than a repair though in case there are any more hidden problems, and as has already been said, insurance may end up costing you in this case, which doesn't seem fair. It's well under a year old and needs to be 'fit for purpose' under consumer law, as far as I know. Whatever the price, bows just don't do this normally!
I'm sure none of this makes you feel better just at the moment though, so sorry this has happened to you sad.gif

JoJo, so sorry to hear about your bow. I agree with Miffy - consumer law is on your side.
I really hope the bow maker/retailer gives you a replacement.

Also - I had similar "tightness" problems with my old (£17) bow and case, but after a year it's still in one piece and I play most days.

Good luck with getting this sorted out.

Luthier said he will speak to the dealer and he feels confident they will replace the frog smile.gif will go back to shop next week on saturday smile.gif

AND to add 'insult to injury'
I BROKE my £50 chin rest this morning!!! but this was me doing it!
I was putting violin in a different case from its usual (it's only ever been in my gewa case since the new super-high 35mm SAS chin-rest in ebony has been put on), I closed the lid (or so I thought), then was 'zipping the zip' round but it would not close as the lid was not shut properly so I gently force lid shut (BEWARE EVERYONE DO NOT EVER FORCE ANYTHING NOT EVEN SLIGHTLY!!) and I heard a big CRACK! ohmy.gif ohmy.gif
to explain it simply, the way this case is made was not accomodating my extra high sas chin rest, but pressing on lid force went on the lip of the chin rest, the bit furthest away from the main body of chin rest, the bit which is 4cms away from violin body (that's how high it is) and the lip cracked!

I may be able to super-glue it back in place, will give it a go now sad.gif

Can I kindly suggest that you do not touch anything for the rest of the day! blink.gif

Still think the chinrest also had had a previous trauma before it came to you, but agree with everyone else - please sit quietly and play with things you only need a remote control for, for the rest of the day biggrin.gif

Ooooch! That crack must've been a shock! Only thank goodness, (as you no doubt have), that it wasn't your violin itself..... blink.gif

Oh dear, jojo! I hope today was much better for you! mellow.gif

Glad you got it sorted. Probably a good decision as a new bow might not have felt the same.

Yes, I didn't quite fancy the whole 're-trying' bows etc and I knew this bow is fine for me so might as well stick to what I know ph34r.gif
Vitula
