Can't give an answer to something like this.
For example, I despise the sound of the violin unless it's being played by someone of an excellent standard - the same goes for a lot of the instruments here. I guess I would vote one thing if these were being played by someone of grade 8, and another thing if being played by someone with the FRSM in performance.

Violin, Saxophone and Flute- I can't choose between them!

Well flutes sound really nice and it's quite difficult to sound out of tune when playing it, and flutes
are amazing as far as Boroque music goes and stuff and i just love the sound. But violins are fab and much more fun to play than flutes (in my opinion anyway) and if played in tune, vibrato can sound absolutely amazing and there's so much more that u can get out of a violin sound wise! They suit more or less any type of music and sound brilliant! But obviously that depends on your musical preferences and the level that u are at on the instruments. If u are at the same level for both the instruments, i would say that violin is better as the further u progress the more beautiful the sound, with a flute it sounds more or less the same whatever level u are at! So if u are still on the low grades and arent planning on going much further with the instrument, flute would be the better option, if u want to progress and play something that will produce AMAZING sound when u reach grade 6+ then violin is definetly a better option. MUCH better option. I say this because i've played both and i absolutely LOVE playing the violin!
With a violin its also much easier to gain a place in a county orchestra than it is with a flute - so that's something else to consider! Well, there must be some good reason for why violins make up the largest proportion of an orchestra!!

I think the clarinet's got a really nice sound (apart from the odd squeak) no matter how good the player is. Violins can sound nice, but they can sound like a strangled cat if they're not played very well.

I voted harp maybe I'm just voting that because I had my first every harp lesson today and I'm loving harp! I do love flutes too but only if it's a reasonable good standard. I hate listening to flutes when they're just puffing away though. Although flute is hard to master at first with the tone etc. then it does sound great. But I'm hooked on the harp at the moment even though I can hardly play anything!

well personally, i think that the nicest instrument is the oboe. even though it can sound like a duck, it has an amazing power to express emotions.
listen to me eh, i sound intelligent! pretty good for a trumpeter.
see you all

I voted clarinet; the soprano ones get the best parts in most marches, altos are jsut weird. Black sheep of the family. Basses have that wonderful Oriental feel to them, and contrabass and contralto sound so delightfully... evil.

I may be slightly biased here but I love the piano. I love its giant range in pitch, dynamic and its versatility. As much as I love the violin and the flute, I couldn't listen to them solo as much as I could listen to solo piano.

I think any instrument can sound great if its being played by someone of a good standard, but i do like the sound of all the woodwind instruments and the piano!

As an oboist I would have to say oboe because it has a lovely sound when it is played well especially at the high registers. The problem is it is difficult to play and takes a long time to make a decent sound. Also the cor anglais a relative instrument of the oboe (tenor) has a very rich sound.
More of a chance being accepted in an orchestra as oboists can be hard to find.

As a flautist i would have to say the flute as it has a beautiful rich smooth flowing sound which you can listen to for long periods of time and not get bored

Im probably being really biased here but I find the flute the nicest instrument to listen to!(may have something to do with the fact it is my first instrument!) It has a gorgous tone that you cannot get with any other instrument and the ablity to produce many different tone to suit the music you are playing!

I can't believe you haven't given french horn as one of your options, and I can't believe nobody has protested until now!!!! The french horn is (and I'm a little biased here) easily the most beautiful sounding instrument in the world. It can sound really sweet and pure in the high register when it's played quietly, or really noble and triumphant in fanfare-type music, and the low register can sound really funny or really scary. It has a massive dynamic and note range, hand stopping is brilliant, everyone knows it's a really difficult instrument to play so you get loads of credit for everything you do, everyone wants you in their orchestra because there's always a shortage of horn players and you can make people cry with your beautiful solos (I did once- a complete fluke believe me!

I will be the first to vote trumpet seeing as no one else seems to like it. Even though piano is my first instrument I still prefer the trumpet as it sounds much better with other instruments, I think. What I like listening to best is a full brass band, can't stand violins and flutes (no offence)!
