I have been teaching for a few years now, the most part of this I spent working for the local music service who demanded we teach all pupils from the Suzuki method. Having become a private teacher recently I am suddenly very aware that my repertoire knowledge is very limited - especially for books for beginners up to about grade 3 standard!

I don't have a huge amount of money but am willing (and think it's neccessary!) to buy a few more books to add to the ones I've got. It is difficult to make the right decisions about music books as there are very few music shops around that have a wide enough selection to browse through before you buy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for books worth getting for beginners? Or books to suppliment around the grade 1, 2 and 3 syllabus's?

Try the Cello Time series by Kathy & David Blackwell - published by OUP. I use the violin & viola versions and get on very well with them.

I too have the violin and viola versions and enjoy them.

As well as Time Pieces, More Time Pieces and Violoncello music for beginners (3rd vol of this is now available, by the way), my daughter enjoyed First Repertoire for Cello by Legg and Gout and Jazzin' About by Pam Wedgwood (both Faber).

I had cello lessons for my last two years at school (1963-4!).
Then left and handed the schools cello back, I havent touched one since. I was working at the time on a little Sonata (in C) By Breval. I guess that must have been about Grade 3 or 4 ? (can anyone say?) I have a hankering to start again when I retire. Before that I was working on a book called 'Petits Morceaux' by W H Squire (all in first position) and Violincello Method Book 2 by Piatti (I think I had book 1 first)
