I prefer playing in an orchestra or in small groups (trios are nice). I hate playing solos because I hate everyone listening to me and my inevitable mistakes!!!

I don't like playing in my orchestra, because most of the music they play is boring. I like playing in a flute group, because everyone gets a chance to be heard over everyone else, so it's not just you who could make a mistake. I have to play solo in front of everyone for my A level exam in february, and i'm really dreading it- i cant even practise with my parents in the house because i get so worked up about the fact they can hear me

I haven't really played with an orchestra, it was of such alimited size in my secondary school, it was more of a select ensemble.. ie 5 flutes, 6 violins (on the rare occasion their peripatetic teacher made them go), a clarinet, a euphonium, 2 guitars and very occasionally a cello!
Although I like playing as a flute choir, theres about 30 of us, but I most enjoy playing trios, duets etc. My thinking for this is, that if theres more of you, you don't stand out as much, but people can still hear you.
Solos aren't too bad, as long as I am actually confident I can play the piece well... although I prefer to play with piano accompaniment!!

Playing with a piano accompaniment is fun, I agree! It's when I have to play solos that I get really nervous!

I love playing in orchestra at school, because we always have so much fun.

There's an "orchestra" of a varying size for Family Services at my village church- at the 4pm Nativity there were two violins, three recorders, two trombones, a pianist, three clarinettests, a saxophne,a trumpet and two Flutes. Some people were playing two instruments though...
I also like playing solos with a piano accompaniment- because I trust my pianst so much I enjoy playing them and so I get confidence from good performances.

I love playing in my band (which is really an orchestra without strings), especially as some of the music is really exciting and we sound fabulous, but there is no better feeling than when you relax during a solo, enjoy the performance and play well.

I enjoy playing yes, just not in front of people!
I much prefer the person challenge of looking at a new piece of music and gradually building it up till I'm happy. It doesn't need to be performance level or anything that way.

No-one can argue with the way you feel. You just feel that way. Full stop. I hope you like playing the flute, as you have obviously reached a high standard on it, but it's perfectly possible to enjoy doing something in the private without wanting to do it any other way, and I'm sure there are other people who feel as you do. I expect you will meet some of them (perhaps via the Forums) if you haven't already, and be able to play with other people in private for fun.

Oh, now I understand what you meant *eureka*

!!! I definately agree that I prefer playing for myself (well, and my flute teacher) rather than performing, but when I do perform (which is inevitable occasionally) I like orchestra or playing with piano accompaniment best!

I perfer not to play with a piano, but I think thats because it tend to put me off, different pino's and accmpanists do everything differently!
Playing in a group isn't so bad, but I still shake like crazy!

it's good to play with piano with someone you can have proper amounts of rehearsal with ect and get to know the piano part well. I'm fortunate in that the guy who accompanies me also happens to be my friend and my piano teacher, so occassionally we play together for fun anyway, we know each other well (cos communication is vital to it being successful) and when my exam was coming up we just lopped a bit of time off my piano lessons and rehearsed then which worked really well. If you can have proper rehearsals and get on with your accompanist (even if you don't know them that well, if you hate each other then it will show and spoil it) then that can be really fun and rewarding. Tamsin, you need to find a really good pianist and become friends, lol! or if any of your friends play piano, give them your accompaniment parts
