after i bought the flute i tried to play it see if i could make a sound, but i tried over 10 minutes and it didn't sound at all, i don't know anything about flute.
can anyone help me with my problem, is it because i have very thick lips?my parents will be very dissapointed if i can not be able to learn flute and it costs them lots of money.

OK, firstly, don't panic. The flute is the hardest instrument to learn to blow. I think I can say that with reasonalbe confidence.
It took me 30 minutes before I got my first noise, (after my teacher had shown me the correct way and everything) and, like Natalie, about a month before I could get a sound everytime.
I was several months before I could hit a decent D2, and now I still have trouble with some of the top notes.
If you pop along to the viva Flute forum, there's a lot more teachers and specialists around who can give you some hints etc, whereas I'm no expert, but just keep trying, and it'll come.

i learnt quite quickly cos ma teacher made me stand rite n front of him facing hiim
he told me 2 do these things:
1)get ur mouth on the lip plate n imagine ur blowing n it is working
2) breath deeply
3) blow as hard as possible trying not to move ur mouth (try 2 knock the person down by blowing but intsead of blowing at them blow into the hole )
keep trying this until u get a not oh yea n start with a b (on the stave) its the easiest note 2 get a sound
then when u get the note try 2 hold on 2 it for longer until it sound steady n uve cracked it

Hiya there
I learnt to blow on something that i do believe came out of the dustbin
But may i suggest glass bottles to practise on?
Dunno they always seem easier.

Take only the head joint ( the bit with the hole u blow thru) at first then put it under ur lips on ur chin and relax ur face DO NOT SMILE as this makes it harder. Then imagine u are blowing over the top of a bottler. Do not blow into the hole blow across it. It should have nothing to do wiv how fat ur lips are.

Good Luck!

Do not smile....?!
If you don't smile you will make a terrible sound, and though it may be easier it will not be correct......
When i first started i taught myself from a book, but after a while i got a teacher, and she told me that i was holding my mouth in the wrong position; that to get a clear note you must

.

Hi,
It really helped me when i started to take the headjoint-the part with just the hole cover the open end with a hand and blow. Then take the hand off etc
